The Canisius College baseball team will take on Virginia, West Virginia and Charlotte in its 2009 schedule that features 17 home games, including the Big Four Baseball Classic at the Demske Sports Complex.
Canisius opens with a four-game series at Gardner-Webb Feb. 20-22. The Golden Griffins will take on Charlotte in a three-game series Feb. 27-March 1. The 49ers have won 40 games each of the last two seasons and have the fourth-highest winning percentage in the country since 2006.
The Griffs will play single games at West Virginia (March 9), Virginia Commonwealth (March 17) and Virginia (March 18). The Cavaliers have qualified for the NCAA Tournament each of the past five seasons.
The 2008 MAAC regular-season champions have their home opener on March 25, against Buffalo before opening conference play against Marist March 28-29. The home schedule includes non-conference games against Le Moyne (March 31) and St. Bonaventure (April 15). Canisius also will play a road, non-conference game at Kent State April 7.
The Griffs will play the three other MAAC Tournament teams on the road, facing Rider (April 4-5), Manhattan (April 25-26) and Siena (May 2-3). The Griffs will host Saint Peter’s (April 18-19), Fairfield (May 9-10) and Niagara (May 14-15).
The 2009 MAAC Tournament will take place at Waterfront Park in Trenton, N.J. on May 21-23.
Canisius will host the Big Four Classic on April 28-29, playing Niagara in the first round with St. Bonaventure and Buffalo playing the other first-round game.
The Canisius College baseball team set a program-record with 41 victories during the 2008 season and earned its first MAAC regular-season title since 1994. The Golden Griffins return 21 letterwinners from last year’s team.
