Bethune-Cookman University Head Baseball Coach Mervyl Melendez announced 13 early signees to attend B-CU and play baseball for the Wildcats in 2009-2010.

“We addressed many of the needs we will have in the future for our baseball program,” said Melendez of his 2009-2010 recruiting class. “This is our biggest recruiting class ever (previous high was 10 signees). We are very satisfied with the recruiting efforts of our coaching staff. And pleased in the quality of student-athletes that we have signed.”

Listed are the 13 B-CU Baseball Early Signees and Coach Melendez comments on each player.

Raul David Rivera: 6-2 · 195 · RHP · San Juan, PR /Colegio San Vicente de Paul

“Raul David will make an immediate impact at the Division I level. His make up and ability to pitch make him one of the top 100 High School prospects in the nation according to Baseball America.”

Gabriel Hernandez: 6-O · 180 · RHP · Toa Baja, PR /PRBAHS

“Gabby is a high profile recruit out of Puerto Rico. He is an athlete on the mound and will pay immediate dividends for our program.”

Luis Cintron: 6-0 160 LHP Las Piedras, PR /Darton College

“Luis is a dominant LHP who pitches in the upper 80’s with good command of his pitches. Luis could be a weekend pitcher for us next year”

Julio Morales: 6-1 170 RHP San Juan, PR /Wabash Valley CC

“Julio is a converted outfielder who possesses a great arm. He has the ability to dominate games with his low 90’s fastball.”

Keith Doby: 6-1 205 RHP Palm Beach Gardens, FL/ William T. Dwyer High School

“Keith has a great feel for all the pitches. He combines a great breaking ball with an upper 80’s fastball. He has the tools to become a special pitcher at the Division 1 level.”

Spencer Johnson: 6-2 215 RHP Jacksonville FL/ Edward H. White High School

“Spencer is ranked among the top 150 Florida High School prospects according to Prospectwire.com. Spencer will be able to come out of the bullpen and give us some quality innings.”

Brandon Turner: 5-9 160 OF/LHP Deland, FL/ Deland High School

“Brandon is a great defender in the outfield and also has the arm strength to help us on the mound.”

Joseph Sharkey: 5-10 180 C/RHP Royal Palm Beach, FL/ Royal Palm Beach High School

“Joey has a great arm and great instincts behind the plate. He will also help us on the mound with his upper 80’s fastball.”

DJ Leonard: 5-11 180 OF Wellington, FL/ Palm Beach Community College

“DJ will hit for average and power in the middle of the lineup. DJ will bring leadership and experience to the team in 2010.”

David Lee: 6-3 210 OF Jacksonville, FL/ Paxson School for Advance Studies

“David is a strong outfielder that will provide power to the lineup. He will develop into a great player at this level.”

Ozzie Perez: 5-9 155 MIF Baja, PR/ Las Cumbres School

“Ozzie will be able to contribute to our club in many ways. He will hit, steal bases and play outstanding defense.”

Juan Perez: 5-11 190 RHP/3B Orlando, FL/ Central Florida Community College

“Juan is a two way player in junior college who will be an immediate help to our program. He will be used primarily as a pitcher.”

Jordan Dailey: 6-0 160 RHP Orlando, FL/Cypress Creek High School

“Jordan played for Team Mizuno Florida under George Gonzalez. Under Coach Gonzalez Team Mizuno has been one of the best scout teams in the United States and Jordan has been a vital part of Team Mizuno’s success. Jordan will come out of the bullpen and provide great innings for us.”
