UTPA head coach Manny Mantrana announced the signing of four junior college standouts to join the Broncs for the 2009-10 academic campaign.

Leo Chang (Sarasota, FL/ South Florida CC) joins the team as a right-handed pitcher.

“Leo has the potential to be a front line pitcher at any level,’ said Mantrana. “He has an unbelievable arm with the ability to throw a plus breaking ball. With his ability and our pitching system, Chang has the potential to be a top draft pick in the future.”

Jacob Hosey (Topeka, KS / Allen CC) will be added to the pitching corps as a right-handed pitcher.

“The pitching ability and mound presence that Jacob brings to UTPA Baseball is hard to match,” said Mantrana. “His most valuable asset, above his good fastball and curve ball, is his ability to pitch inside. Hosey has the ability to dominate the inner half of the plate, which is rare at this level.”

Hayden Daugherty (Elk City, OK / Garden City CC) joins the team as a right-handed pitcher.

“Few pitchers have the potential to throw a power change-up like Daugherty,” Mantrana said. “His ability to move the ball in and out along with his ability to throw a curve ball over for a strike will put him in the mix for a position in the starting rotation.”

Alex Carnell (Oakville, Ontrario / Cisco CC) joins the team as an outfielder.

Alex has one of the strongest arms around in the outfield. In addition, he is composed at the plate and can run the bases, which should land him in the top of the line-up,” said Mantrana. “He has the character to step in and be a leader on and off the field.”

All four of the signees will join the Bronc Baseball for the 2009-10 season.
