Pitt signs four during Early Period

PITTSBURGH– University of Pittsburgh head baseball coach Joe Jordano has announced the signings of four student-athletes for the 2010 season. Jeff Kelly, Steve Shelinsky, Royce Consigli and J.R. Leonardi have made their intentions for next year clear– they want to be Panthers. The four signed national letters of intent to become members of Pitt’s baseball team during the early signing period.

Kelly (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) led his team to a second-place finish in the Pioneer Athletic Conference as a pitcher. The team also went to the District 1-Class AAA playoffs. In 35 innings, he allowed 21 hits and struck out 40 in 10 appearances, last spring with the Wildcats. Kelly finished the season with a 2.80 earned run average.

Shelinsky (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) plays outfielder and has been a starting player on the varsity team since his sophomore year. He earned third team all-league honors in his junior season. Shelinksy tallied three triples and seven home runs with a .333 batting average.

Consigli (Welland,Ontario/Notre Dame) has 31 doubles, 15 triples and 17 home runs in 110 hits as an outfielder. He earned a .658 batting average in 167 bats, last summer, in the East Coast Grays and the Niagra Rebels under-18 competition.

Leonardi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor-Allderdice) competed in the PIAA state playoffs, this past season. As pitcher, he struck out 48 in 32 innings with a 2.19 earned run average. Leonardi hit .535 with 18 RBI and 12 doubles.

The Panthers open the 2009 season at the Service Academies Spring Classic in Millington, Tenn. Pitt will play Bradley on Feb. 20, NAVY the following day and complete the Classic on Feb. 22 against Memphis.
