CHARLESTON, S.C. — Nine games against NCAA Regional participants from last season and 27 home games highlight the 2009 College of Charleston baseball schedule.
“We are excited about our schedule,” said head coach Monte Lee, who enters his first season as the Cougars skipper. “We are playing several top programs that consistently compete in the NCAA Postseason. I want our players to compete against the best teams in the nation and to give our fans an exciting brand of baseball to watch.
“I believe playing these programs will help prepare us for competing in the SoCon and in our quest to reach the postseason.”
The Cougars begin the season playing 13 of their first 16 games at home, starting with their season opener from Feb. 20-22 against Miami (OH).
The Cougars embark on a four-game road swing that will see them play four games against teams that qualified for last season’s NCAA Tournament. The stretch begins on Feb. 24th at UNC Wilmington, before the team plays in the East Carolina Tournament from Feb. 27th to Mar. 1st. There, the Cougars will play Oklahoma State, St. John’s and host East Carolina over the three days.
After playing Xavier and Charleston Southern on Mar. 3rd and 4th, respectively, the Cougars open Southern Conference play against UNC Greensboro at home on March 7th.
The Cougars continue their home stand with non-conference games with Quinnipiac and Mercer, along with a SoCon series with Western Carolina.
For the remainder of the season, the Cougars have out-of-conference tilts with Coastal Carolina, South Carolina, Clemson and UNC Asheville, along with return dates with Mercer and Charleston Southern. The Cougars host South Carolina at Patriots Point on Mar. 24th and Coastal Carolina on Apr. 28th.
In Southern Conference action, Charleston plays host to Furman, Davidson and Appalachian State. The team host The Citadel in a non-league matchup on April 7th.
The Cougars play league series’ at Southern Conference newcomer Samford, Georgia Southern, Elon and Wofford. The Cougars ends their 2009 season with a three-game series at The Citadel from May 14th-16th.
The Southern Conference Tournament will be played at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C. from May 20th-24th.
The Cougars return 16 letterwinners from last year’s squad who went 39-20 and advanced to the Southern Conference Championship game.
