Wichita State Signs Seven Baseball Players in Early Period

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State has received a national letter-of-intent from seven baseball players in the early signing period, Head Coach Gene Stephenson announced Nov. 20.

Nate Goro, an infielder, from Lafayette High School in Lafayette, Mo.; Garrett Gould, a right-handed pitcher from Maize High School in Maize, Kan.; Micah Green, an outfielder from Cherokee Trail High School in Aurora, Colo., Aaron LaBrie, a left-handed pitcher from Washington High School in Sioux Falls, S.D.; Tobin Mateychick, a right-handed pitcher from Enid High School in Enid, Okla., TJ McGreevy, a right-handed pitcher from Hayden High School in Topeka, Kan., and Preston Springer a third baseman from Odessa College in Odessa, Texas, have signed national letters-of-intent with the Shockers.

“We are very pleased with this group of seven quality student-athletes,” Stephenson said. “They represent another outstanding recruiting class and we look forward with great anticipation to their arrival on campus in the fall of 2009. Each young man in this group has tremendous potential to help us achieve our annual goal of competing for another national championship.”

Last summer for the Rawlings Prospects, Goro hit .343 with seven home runs and 33 RBI. He also had a .415 on base percentage and a .607 slugging percentage. He played in the Area Code Games last summer and finished in the top 50 overall and number three at the shortstop position.

Gould went 9-2 with a 0.61 ERA for Maize High School last spring. He also struck out 95 in 57 innings and had two no-hitters. He earned first team all-state honors as a junior and was named the 6A Pitcher of the Year. He also played in the Area Code Games last summer and in October he was named MVP of the World Wood Bat Association fall championship as he threw eight scoreless innings and struck out 18, while allowing one hit and one walk.

Last spring for Cherokee Trail High School, Green hit .621 with 32 runs, 36 hits, nine doubles, four triples, five home runs, 32 RBI and eight stolen bases. He earned all-state and all-city honors in 2008 and participated in the Area Code Games as well as being named the 4A state MVP in 2007. As a sophomore, he hit .467 with 33 runs, 42 hits, eight doubles, two triples, six home runs and 34 RBI.

LaBrie went 8-1 with a 1.27 ERA for the Sioux Falls Cyclones last summer. He also hit .338 with 22 runs, five doubles, one triple and four home runs. He has been named the Washington High School Pitcher of the Year the past two seasons and is also a letterwinner on the wrestling team.

Last spring for Enid High School, Mateychick went 7-3 with a 2.46 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 62 2/3 innings. As a sophomore in 2007, he went 6-4 with a 2.16 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 48 2/3 innings.

McGreevy went 6-2 with a 2.01 ERA in 43 1/3 innings with 43 strikeouts for Hayden High School last spring. In 2008, he earned first team all-state honors in 4A and was also named co-Player of the Year in 4A as well as earning first team all-Centennial League and all-city honors. He is also a standout on the football and basketball teams.

Last spring for Odessa College, Springer hit .424 with 37 runs, 59 hits, 14 doubles, four triples, four home runs and 47 RBI and earned all-conference honors. This past summer for the El Dorado Broncos, he hit .409 with nine doubles, one triple, eight home runs and 34 RBI.
