The CBB continues our countdown to the 2009 College Baseball season with our Top 50 players to watch. We will be providing one player each day (Monday-Saturday) until we reach number 1.
We continue the list today with junior outfielder Angelo Songco from Loyola Marymount. He is a 6-0 175 pound left handed hitter from Bishop Alemany High School and Granada Hills California.
Angelo had an outstanding 2007 freshman campaign with Loyola Marymount where he finished first or second in batting average (.321), runs (36), homers (4), doubles (22), RBI (33) and slugging percentage (.528). He was named to the All-Freshman team by Collegiate Baseball and Ping! Baseball. The West Coast Conference also honored him by naming him the Freshman of the Year and to the All-WCC First team.
Last season, Angelo continued his strong start to his career by playing in 51 games while leading the team in
the triple crown categories with a .356 average, 15 homers, and 48 RBI. After the 2008 season, Angelo made the trek across the country to play in the prestigious Cape Cod League. He ended up winning the CCBL All-Star Game Home Run Contest showing off his power. He ended up finishing the summer season with a .261 average, eight homers, and 26 RBI.
We think Angelo will continue to develop as he was referenced in a previous article written by Willie Nicklaus as one of the lesser known power guys in the nation. (Click here for article). We know he might not have the biggest size but has continued to show that he can hit at the collegiate level and we believe he will be one of the better players on the west coast in 2009.
