LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The UALR baseball team announced its 2009 schedule on Wednesday, a slate which features 31 home games beginning with a four-game series against Northern Iowa on Feb. 20-22 at Gary Hogan Field.

First-year head coach Scott Norwood’s squad features 11 returning lettermen and 20 newcomers, including two of the team’s top three hitters from a year ago in seniors Matt Apfel and Eric Hanlon. Apfel earned Second Team All-Sun Belt accolades in 2008 after leading the Trojans with a .387 batting average, 40 runs scored and 15 doubles, while Hanlon hit .324 with 12 doubles and 16 stolen bases.

UALR will play seven of its first nine games at home beginning with the season opener against Northern Iowa on Friday, Feb. 20 at 3 p.m. Following a doubleheader at Oklahoma on March 3, the Trojans head to Boca Raton, Fla. to open Sun Belt Conference play against Florida Atlantic (March 6-8).

After playing a two-game series at Tennessee-Martin on March 24-25, the Trojans will have the luxury of playing 16 of their next 22 games at Gary Hogan Field, beginning with a three-game league series against Middle Tennessee (March 27-29).

The month of May will see UALR play six of its final nine games on the road, but the Trojans close out the regular season at home against Arkansas State on May 14-16. The league’s top eight teams will advance to the 2008 Sun Belt Conference Tournament, which will take place May 20-23 in Troy, Ala.
