PULLMAN, Wash. – Eleven high school seniors have each signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball for Washington State beginning in 2010, Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut announced, Monday.
The class includes Judge Memorial (Salt Lake City) right-handed pitcher A.J. Carman, Mountlake Terrace catcher Paul Clingan, Cedarcrest (Duvall) right-handed pitcher Travis Cook, Woodinville left-handed pitcher Bret DeRooy, Richland shortstop Brett Jacobs, San Dimas (Calif.) catcher Josh Leyland, Bishop Kelly (Boise, Idaho) right-handed pitcher Nico Lytle, Cottonwood (Salt Lake City) right-handed pitcher Kendall Mayer, Friday Harbor left-handed pitcher Richie Ochoa, Shorecrest (Shoreline) left handed pitcher/first baseman James Robbins and South Kitsap (Port Orchard) infielder Brady Steiger.
“Our staff, led by recruiting coordinator Travis Jewett, put together a fine class that will help us in our continued quest to win a Pac-10 and national championship,” Marbut said. “This class has great projection on the mound and some hitters that will bid for playing time the minute they step on campus. We’re excited to get these fine young men to Pullman and have them be part of the Cougar family.”
Carman is a two-time 3A All-State selection and was All-Region 10 First Team last season. He is on pace to break school records for wins, hits and RBI.
Clingan led Mountlake Terrace to a district title last season and threw out 86 percent of runners who tried to steal against him.
Cook was a First Team All-State honoree and helped Cedarcrest to a 20-7 overall record and third place finish in the state.
DeRooy, whose brother Garrett is a sophomore transfer on WSU’s baseball team, had a 19-strikeout game last season and is an Under Armour Preseason All-American.
Jacobs was the 4A State Player of the Year and All-Area MVP. He tied the Richland school record for home runs in a season with 11.
Leyland batted .392 over the last two seasons and 60 percent of his hits were for extra bases, including four home runs.
Lytle was 8-0 last season and was the winning pitcher for Bishop Kelly in the district semifinal, state semifinal and 4A State Championship.
Mayer was 4-0 in the state playoffs to help Cottonwood capture a state title. He was named 4A Second Team All-State.
Ochoa is a two-time All-Northwest 1A League selection. Last season, he was named league MVP and All-State First Team.
Robbins was an All-Wesco South League and All-State First Team honoree has both a pitcher and first baseman in 2008.
Steiger earned Narrows League Bridge Division MVP, All-Narrows League, All-Area, All-County and All-State First Team awards last season.
