CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami baseball team won the first of its two scrimmages this week with a 7-5 victory over Miami Dade College Thursday night at Mark Light Field. Miami, trailing 2-1 after four, scored two runs in the fifth, two in the sixth, one in the seventh and another in the eighth to pull ahead for the two-run win.

With the Hurricanes trailing the Sharks 4-3 in the sixth inning, Ryan Jackson put UM up 5-4 when he smacked a double to center, scoring David Villasuso from second and eventually Jonathan Weislow from first following a MDC throwing error.

The Sharks had held the lead early on, with two runs in the first and a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth. The Hurricanes got one across in the second and two more in the fifth before the deciding sixth.

David Gutierrez started on the mound for UM and tossed the first three innings. Newcomer Taylor Wulf tossed the next three, allowing just one earned run in picking up the win. Two more newcomers – Kevin Youst and Sam Robinson – bridged the gap before handing it over to closer Kyle Bellamy, who kept the Sharks scoreless in 1 1/3 innings of work to earn the save.

After going 3-for-4 in the alumni game, Jackson had another successful night at the plate, reaching base four times with walks in the first and fifth, a single in the third and his RBI double in the sixth. Jason Hagerty also had a solid night at the plate, smacking a pair of doubles in addition to drawing a seventh inning walk.

The Sharks got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first on an error and an RBI single by Adrian Morales.

The `Canes cut the lead to 2-1 in the second. Hagerty led off the inning with a double down the line in right before Ryan Perry was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Yasmani Grandal sacrificed the runners over and a Scott Lawson sacrifice fly to left scored Hagerty from third for UM’s first run of the contest.

Miami Dade pushed its lead back to two runs in the fifth when a wild pitch by Wulf pushed another MDC runner across.

UM tied it up in the bottom half of the fifth on a Harold Martinez sacrifice fly followed by a Hagerty double, scoring Nathan Melendres and Jackson.

The following inning however, MDC re-took the lead with a Yoandy Barosso RBI triple to right, putting the Sharks up 4-3 before UM took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning.

Up 5-4, UM added another run in the seventh on a Villasuso fielder’s choice grounder to third with the bases loaded. MDC scored their fifth run on a UM’s fifth error of the night in the eighth but the Hurricanes got the run back in the bottom half of the inning, closing the scoring at 7-5.

The `Canes will turn around and face Indian River Community College Friday at 6 p.m. at Mark Light Field. Last fall, UM defeated Indian River, 12-5, in a scrimmage on Oct. 20.
