Reno, Nev. – The blue team won a 16-8 slugfest over the white squad in the first game of the University of Nevada baseball teams Blue versus White series that will conclude fall practice. The blue holds a 1-0 advantage in the five-game series that will continue Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. before taking a break over the weekend. All games are being played at Nevada’s Peccole Park and are free to the public.
The white squad led 2-0 after five innings of action but the blue squad exploded for 11 runs in the top of the sixth to make a winner of right-hander Tyler Rogstad. Rogstad a newcomer to the team allowed two runs on three hits in his five innings of action. Righty Stephen Bautista started for the white team and left with his squad on top 2-0 after pitching five innings of one-hit baseball but the bullpen was unable to hold the lead. Senior right-hander Derek Achelpohl was the losing pitcher for the white squad.
The blue team was led by left fielder Nick Melino, another newcomer to the squad, who had two hits in three at bats and drove in six runs. Both of Melino’s hits were doubles. Senior third baseman Tyson Jaquez had four hits in five at bats with three of those hits being doubles. Jaquez finished with three RBI in the game. Transfer Willie Bowman played shortstop for the blue squad and added a solo home run.
Left fielder Brock Stassi blasted a three-run homer for the white squad and shortstop Kevin Rodland added a solo shot.
Starters for Friday’s game two will be junior left-hander Chris Garcia for the blue squad and right-hander Tony Fagan will take the mound for the white team.
