Freshman VJ Bunner capped off a seven-run sixth inning with a two-run single to help the Red squad defeat the Gray, 7-5, in the first game of the Lamar Fall World Series on Monday.

The Gray team scored five runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead. Senior outfielder Anthony Moore had a two-run inside the park home run, while senior infielder Jeremiah Sammy collected a pair of hits on the day.

The Red team responded in the bottom of the sixth (of the 7-inning game) with the seven runs. In addition to Bunner’s two RBIs, junior outfielder Quentin Luquette had a two-run triple to help the comeback.

Freshman outfielder Kevin Roebuck and senior infielder Brian Taylor each went 2-for-3 in the contest.

Junior righthander Spencer Cuniff got the win after striking out the final two Gray batters in the sixth inning – the only two men he faced. Sophomore righthander Taylor McInnis earned the save with a scoreless seventh.

Junior righty Matison Smith had an impressive outing for the Gray in a no-decision. He threw five innings of two-hit ball with five strikeouts and no walks.

The series continues with Game 2 on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
