NATCHITOCHES – A seventh-inning solo home run by Justin O’Neal sent the game to an extra frame where D.D. Lott singled in Eric DeBlanc as Kelly’s Heroes defeated Bobby’s Bombers 2-1 in the second game of the Demon World Series Classic Saturday afternoon at Brown-Stroud Field.

The win ties the best-of-five series up at one game apiece. Game three will be played on Sunday at 3 with a 7-inning contest.

“There was some really good baseball out there today,” said NSU head coach J.P. Davis. “There were no errors on either side and the Heroes got some good, timely hits.”

Bombers’ starting pitcher Heath Hennigan threw six innings giving up one run and a walk while striking out seven.

He was lifted before the seventh inning by Ryan Zimmerman who suffered the loss after tossing 1.3 innings with three strikeouts.

Kyle Broughton threw seven innings for the Heroes, giving up five hits and a run. Relief pitcher Michael O’Campo picked up the win after giving up two hits with a strikeout.

The Bombers got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning off a run-scoring single from third baseman Trevor Geist.

The score remained 1-0 until O’Neal blasted a solo home run in the top of the seventh to help send the game to an extra inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, Heroes’ second baseman Eric DeBlanc hit a one-out double to right field. Justin Martinez then walked and a wild pitch sent DeBlanc to third. That forced the Bombers to intentionally walk Trent Grondin to load the bases, and that set up Lott’s walk-off hit.

The series, which continues at 3 on Sunday with a seven inning game, brings the conclusion of the Northwestern State fall baseball workouts.
