Eastern Kentucky head coach Jason Stein has released the 2009 baseball schedule for the Colonels. The Colonels will be trying to improve off a 2008 campaign that saw them finish the season with an overall record of 27-28-1, including a 12-15 record in Ohio Valley Conference play.
The season will begin with a three game series against Oakland (February 21-22). The opening weekend home series will be followed by an in-state road trip to Louisville to take on the Cardinals (February 25). The Colonels will then return home for a weekend tournament with Buffalo and IPFW (February 27-March 1). Eastern Kentucky will then host a return trip from Louisville (March 3) and the next day travel to Lexington to take on Kentucky (March 4).
A spring trip to Winter Haven, Florida will give the Colonels six games in six days as they will take on Bowling Green State, Sacred Heart, Bucknell, Vermont, UConn, and Toledo respectively (March 8-14).
Two home mid-week games against Western Kentucky (March 17) and Berea College (March 18) will lead the Colonels into conference play.
To open Ohio Valley conference play Eastern Kentucky will travel to Austin Peay (March 21-22). Following the Austin Peay series, the Colonels will have a road mid-week game at Ohio (March 24) and a home contest against Marshall (March 25) before hosting Morehead State (March 28-29) for the home conference opener.
Three mid-week games then await the Colonels as Miami University (March 31) travels to Richmond for a single game and Kentucky State (April 1) makes the in-state trip for a doubleheader. Conference play then continues with the Colonels welcoming UT Martin (April 4-5). The Colonels will then hit the road for four straight games as they make the trek to Western Carolina (April 8th) for a mid-week clash before traveling to Tennessee Tech (April 10-11) for an Ohio Valley conference road series.
Eastern Kentucky will then return home for a non-conference game against Georgetown College (April 14) before tripping to Marshall (April 15). Home conference play resumes the following weekend as the Colonels take on Murray State (April 18-19). Another challenging mid-week slate has the Colonels hosting Xavier (April 21) and then making a return trip to in-state foe Western Kentucky (April 22). The road trip will continue as the next stop on the schedule finds the Colonels in another road conference series at Jacksonville State (April 25-26).
Before a home weekend series against Chicago State (May 1-3), Eastern Kentucky will stop off in Oxford, Ohio to take on Miami University (April 29). Next up for the Colonels will be a home Ohio Valley series against Southeastern Missouri State (May 9-10) followed by the Dayton Flyers (May 12) coming to town for a non-conference game. Eastern Kentucky will then wrap-up the regular season with a conference road series at Eastern Illinois (May 15-16).
The 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament will begin May 20 in Paducah, Kentucky.
