COLUMBIA, Mo. – – A double by freshman Ben Turner capped off a four-run bottom of the ninth inning for the Mizzou Black team, as it took a 6-5 win in game one of the Fall World Series and hold an early 1-0 advantage in the three-game intersquad series.

The Gold team broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the top half of the ninth inning, but the Black squad answered by plating four in the bottom of the ninth.

After a scoreless four and a half innings, the Black squad put up the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Freshman Andre Rodriguez led off the bottom half of the sixth with a triple. He then scored on a single by fellow freshman Sam Lind.

Mizzou Black held its 1-0 lead until a two-run home run by sophomore Rex Meyr in the top of the seventh inning put the Gold squad in front, 2-1. Sophomore Andrew Thigpen led off the Gold’s half of the seventh inning by getting hit by a pitch and later scored when Meyr homered over the left centerfield wall.

Meyr finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

The Black team tied the game with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, when sophomore Jonah Schmidt scored from third on a delayed double-steal.

Gold loaded the bases in the top of the ninth inning on a pair of singles and a hit batter. Then sophomore Andrew Thigpen crossed the plate when sophomore Ryan Ampleman reached first on an error. Junior Greg Folia then singled through the right side of the infield to drive in two more runs, giving the Gold team a three-run lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, senior Austin Holt and junior Trevor Coleman had RBI singles and sophomore Jonah Schmidt drove in the tying run on a sacrifice fly. Turner then followed with a double just inside the first base bag to drive in Coleman with the game-winning run.

Each starting pitcher threw six innings, but neither factored in the decision. Junior Kyle Gibson allowed one run on four hits and striking out five for Gold, while sophomore Kelly Fick pitched six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out one for the Black team.
