Baseball: Scarlet Home Runs Spark World Series Win

Gwen Stefani, former lead singer of the rock group No Doubt, was not in Bill Davis Stadium Wednesday night, but there were two no-doubt home runs for Team Scarlet that sparked its series-clinching, 7-4, victory over Team Gray in the deciding game of the annual Scarlet and Gray World Series.

Matt Streng, a junior infielder from Upper Arlington hit a two-out blast deep into right field in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull Scarlet back into the lead at 6-4 after the Gray had taken a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning. Then in the sixth inning Ryan Dew, a junior outfielder from Croton, Ohio, sent a laser of a shot into right field to extend the lead to 7-4.

“It was a big moment in the game and I went to the plate looking for a good pitch to hit,” Streng said. “I think it was a 2-1 count and I knew he [Gray pitcher Drew Rucinski] had to throw me something because he didn’t want to get behind 3-1. And he threw me something I could hit.”

Senior Jake Hale pitched the final two innings in relief of winner Andrew Armstrong and allowed just one hit to get the save. The sophomore Armstrong went 5.0 innings and gave up four hits and three earned runs while striking out two and walking two.

Drew Rucinski went 4.2 innings for the Gray and took the loss. FULL STORY

Cardinal takes game 3

Junior Scott Limbocker shut down the opposition for seven innings to give the Arkansas Baseball team’s Cardinal squad its first win in the best of seven intrasquad series against team White at Baum Stadium on Thursday evening, 13-8.

Limbocker threw seven innings and gave up just two runs on four hits, but shaky bullpen work allowed White to come storming back with six runs over the final two innings. Fortunately for Limbocker and the Cardinal team, White failed to make plays and that combined with timely hitting allowed Cardinal to build a huge 8-1 lead by the end of the fifth inning.

Cardinal was first on the scoreboard with a single score in the bottom of the second, but two runs in the third, one in the fourth and four in the fifth proved too much for White to overcome. Cardinal was paced by senior Ben Tschepikow who went 3-5 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored including a double and a line-drive home run over into the right field bullpen. Not only did Cardinal get good defense from its middle infield, but redshirt freshman shortstop Tim Carver also carved out three hits on the evening with a double, a run scored, two stolen bases and three RBI. Red Takes 2-1 Series Lead

The Red team rebounded in game three of the annual Red/White Series on Thursday with a 2-1 victory. The Red team took a 2-1 lead in the five-game series after connecting for two runs off nine hits, which was just enough to give junior Jason Chowning the win and junior Mehdi Djbarr the save.

White won game two on Tuesday, 13-0, after the Red squad claimed victory in game one, 3-1.

Chowning’s start lasted four innings and saw the right hander allow one run off two hits and three walks. Chowning also struck out three batters and was relieved by Djbarr, who closed the door with one hit and three strikeouts over the final three frames.

The Red’s offense provided just enough run support in the victory as junior Kaleb Herren and senior J.T. Wise produced back-to-back RBI singles in the fourth inning to erase White’s 1-0 lead. FULL STORY

Black Wins Series

The Wichita State Black squad won the Shocker Fall World Series with a 6-1 victory in game seven.

Kyle Sisney went 3-for-4 for the Black, while Taylor Gilmore drove in three runs. Black starter Max Hutson earned the win going six innings and giving up one run on six hits with four strikeouts.

Ryan Jones led the Gold going 2-for-4 with a triple. Gold starter Clint Maune took the loss going three innings and giving up five runs on six hits. FULL STORY

Blue Team Takes Third Game of Baseball’s Blue/White World Series

Sophomore Pierre LePage (Wolcott, Conn.) singled in the winning run as he sparked a three-run eighth inning to lead the Blue Team over the White Team in the University of Connecticut baseball team’s final game of the annual Blue/White World Series on Tuesday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field.

The Huskies, who were separated into two teams prior to the start of the Blue/White World Series, finished their fall season with the deciding game on Tuesday.

The Blue Team led the way as they scored the first run of the game as play was scoreless until the fifth inning. With junior Greg Nappo (Madison, Conn.) on the hill for the White Team, the Blue Team put a run on the board as freshman John Andreoli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) led the inning off with a single and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by fellow classmate, Ryan Thompson (Amherst, N.H.). Andreoli later moved to third as Nappo was called for a balk. John Sulzicki (Stratford, Conn.), who led his team to a win over the weekend, drove in Andreoli with a single to left field to put the Blue Team up 1-0. FULL STORY
