The University of Houston baseball team completed its first scrimmage of the fall season Saturday afternoon at Cougar Field against Alvin Community College in two eight inning games.

Houston is in the middle of its month-long fall practice schedule that included today’s game.

After getting their first chance to play outside competition this fall, head coach Rayner Noble was please with what he saw from his squad.

“Considering we played so many young guys and guys that are inexperienced, we played pretty good,” Noble said. “We made some errors out in the field but we are playing guys in multiple positions and trying to settle on who is going to be where. Overall, it was a good day.”

On of the focuses of the scrimmage was getting the Houston pitching staff on the mound.

“The pitchers really competed well,” Noble said. “They threw strikes and we only walked four guys and hit one in 16 innings and that’s not too bad. When you can hold those numbers down you have a chance to be successful.”

During the scrimmage, a couple juniors on the squad put in notable performances. Junior Zak Presley went 5-for-8 on the day, while junior Chris Wallace recorded 3 RBI.

UH will continue its weekday practices, which are set to begin at 2:30 p.m. and are closed to the public, while weekend practices are open to all fans. On Oct. 18, the Cougars will play a final fall game against San Jacinto College at noon.

The fall practice schedule will culminate on Nov. 8 when the 2008 Cougar Baseball team receives their 2008 Conference USA Championship rings and will be honored at the Houston football game against Tulane.
The Cougars open the 2009 season on Feb. 20-22 when they plays host to Kansas State in a weekend, non-conference series at Cougar Field. The series begins at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 20, continues at 4 p.m. on Feb. 21 and will wrap up at noon on Feb. 22.
