Team Black takes Black and Gold Series opener, 10-2.

The Purdue baseball team’s annual Black and Gold Series kicked off on Wednesday with the visiting Black squad rapping out 18 hits en route to a 10-2 victory.

Highlighted by four three-hit days offensively, Team Black jumped out to a 4-2 lead through the first two innings, before exploding for six runs over the final three innings to put the opener away.

After scoring a single run to open the game, the Black squad answered junior Drew Madia’s two-run homer in the half of the first for the Gold with three runs in the second to take a two-run edge.

The 4-2 Black advantage held up over the next four innings, as the two teams traded zeros through the sixth. Team Black finally broke the scoreless stretch in the seventh with a single run in the top of the inning, before exploding for three more runs in the eighth and two additional scores in ninth to win going away.

Senior Brett Haveman led the Black squad offensively, finishing 3 for 5 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases. Redshirt freshman Eric Charles added three singles and a pair of RBIs in six trips to the plate, while senior Eric Nielsen and sophomore David Blount chipped in with three hits each. Nielson finished with a double, a pair of RBIs and a run scored, while Blount scored once and drove in another.

On the mound, Black Team starter Matt Jansen settled in after allowing the early Gold runs in the first. The junior left-hander picked up the win after surrendering two runs on three hits over 4 1/3 innings of work. He struck out five on the day.

Reliever Matt Morgan came on for Jensen in the fifth and worked 4 2/3 scoreless innings the rest of the way to pick up the save. The sophomore right-hander finished with four strikeouts on the afternoon.

Gold Team starter Matt Bischoff was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits over 3 2/3 innings. He struck out three.

Offensive highlights for the Gold Team included Madia’s two-run homer in the first and a 2 for 4 day with a double by redshirt freshman Ryan Bridges.
