The Iowa baseball team won an exhibition game against Iowa Central in the tenth at Duane Banks field, 9-6. In the win, Chett Zeise hit a game winning double in the tenth.
The Tritons came back in the scheduled tenth inning scoring three unearned runs and take a 6-5 lead. However, Iowa came back in the bottom of the inning. Kurtis Muller was hit by a pitch to start things off for Iowa, stole second base and moved to third on the catcher’s throwing error. One out later, Tyson Blaser hit a towering RBI double to right to tie up the game. T.J. Cataldo and Ryan Durant walked to load the bases. Zeise hit a double to deep center field to clear the bases and win the game, 9-6.
The Iowa offense struck first taking a 3-0 lead in the first. It started with a Kevin Hoef hit-by-pitch, followed by a Justin Toole single to right. Muller loaded the bases with a walk and Wes Freie drilled a ball to deep right center for a sac fly to take a 1-0 lead. Tyson Blaser followed with an RBI single to left and Cataldo brought in another Hawkeye run.
The Tritons got on the board in the fourth. Nick Bergeman singled, was moved over on a Deryk Marks single and scored on a double-play.
The Hawkeyes answered in the fourth. Freie reached base on balls and Cataldo knocked him with a single to make it a 4-1 ballgame.
Ten of Iowa’s pitchers got in the game. Michael Jacobs, Zach Kenyon, Zach Robertson, Nick Brown, Jarred Hippen, Phil Schreiber, Matt Douglas, Kyle Heim, Wes Freie and Mike Schurz all got an inning on the mound.
Iowa Central added another run in the sixth.
The Black and Gold added another run in the sixth to make it 5-2. Brauer started things off with a walk and went to second on a wildpitch. He scored on a Muller double to center.
The Tritons added another run in the ninth to make the score 5-3.
Iowa will take on Western Iowa next Friday, October 3rd. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
