Georgetown Baseball Announces Incoming Recruiting Class

– Head Coach Pete Wilk announced that Georgetown Baseball will be welcoming eight new players to the fold this upcoming season. Billy Cosmopulous, Nick Geary, Will Harris, Alex Johnson, Kevin Johnson, Bobby Kirby, Andy Lentz and Rand Ravnaas comprise the incoming class that will try and help the Hoyas move up in the BIG EAST pecking order.

“Billy is a big, strong kid at 6’6″ and is well rounded as a three sport athlete,” Head Coach Pete Wilk said. “While he needs some refinement this year, he should be good further on down the line.”

Cosmopulous served as captain for his football, basketball, and baseball teams at Moses Brown High School in Providence, R.I. During his senior year, he was named MVP of the football and baseball teams. A right-handed pitcher, he received Rhode Island Baseball All-Star honors in 2007 and 2008 and was an All-State Selection in 2008. As a junior and senior, he was named First Team All-Division. Kyle Russell named among Pioneer League’s top prospects

Former Texas Longhorn Kyle Russell was recently named to Baseball America’s Pioneer League Top 20 Prospects list for his performance in 2008.

Russell, who made his professional debut this season for the Ogden Raptors, was ranked No. 10 on the list and was the third-ranked outfielder.

The Tomball, Texas, native played in 61 games for the Raptors, hitting .279 with 46 runs, 13 doubles, five triples, 11 home runs and 46 RBI and helped lead Ogden to the Pioneer League playoffs. His professional rookie season earned him Pioneer League Postseason All-Star Honors. FULL STORY

UT ARLINGTON HOSTS 26TH ANNUAL BASEBALL ALUMNI WEEKEND

The UT Arlington baseball program is hosting its 26th Annual Baseball Alumni weekend this Friday and Saturday. This weekend’s festivities will feature a golf tournament on Friday, and then a day at Clay Gould Ballpark, which will include batting practice, a home run derby, the alumni game and a post-game barbeque.

The former Mavericks in attendance will begin the weekend on Friday at Riverside Golf Club in Grand Prairie with registration beginning at 11:30 a.m. and a shotgun start set at 1 p.m. FULL STORY

Fall Practice Underway For Trojan Baseball

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – UALR head baseball coach Scott Norwood is getting a first glimpse at his new team this week, as the Trojans began fall practice at Gary Hogan Field on Monday. Norwood, in his first season at UALR after leading Ouachita Baptist to a runner-up finish at the NCAA Division II College World Series, has 12 returning lettermen and 23 newcomers on his roster this year.

“We’ve got a bunch of new guys, so we’re just trying to get to know each other and help the players learn a new system,” said Norwood. “The intensity so far has been awesome though, and a lot of the kids reported in really good shape. These guys realize we have an opportunity to get better, and they want to be the ones to do that.” FULL STORY

Fordham Baseball Hires Mark Stevens as Assistant Coach

Fordham baseball coach Nick Restaino announced the hiring of Mark Stevens as assistant coach today. He will serve as the team’s hitting coach, bringing a wealth of college summer league and high school coaching and administrative experience to the program.

Stevens comes to Rose Hill after splitting the last two seasons at Iona College (2008) and Eastern Connecticut State University (2007). In 2007, he helped lead Eastern Connecticut State to the NCAA College World Series in Grande Chute, Wisconsin, where the team batted .326 for the season.

The owner and instructor of The Strike Zone Baseball and Training Facility in Clinton, Connecticut, Stevens has spent five summers as a hitting coach in the wood bat New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL). For four summers, he assisted current Fordham pitching coach Anthony DeCicco with the Manchester Silkworms. In 2003, he served in a similar role with the Middletown Giants of the NECBL. FULL STORY

Hawkeye Fall Season Opener

The University of Iowa baseball team will play its first of three home games at Banks Field Friday at 6 p.m. The Hawkeyes will take on the Iowa Central Tritons, in what is believed to be the first ever contest between both schools. Admission to the game will be free.

The Black and Gold have 14 newcomers including; freshmen Patrick Brennan, Nick Brown, Dallas Burke, Andrew Ewing, Sean Flanagan, Cory Glieden, Jarred Hippen, Andrew Host, Mike McQuillan, Shane Morelock, Phil Schreiber and Chett Zeise and junior transfers Ryan Durant and Zach Robertson.

Iowa boasts 21 returning letter-winners, including; 10 returning pitchers and five infielders. Leading the squad will be seniors Kevin Hoef, Wes Freie and Justin Toole. FULL STORY
