With the start of the 2008-09 academic year, a group of 16 athletes has arrived on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi campus to join the Islander baseball program. Recently, head coach Scott Malone commented on each of the newcomers:
Brett Carnline (RHP) 6-2, 195 lbs. Conroe, Texas (Wharton CC)
“Brett had a tremendous season at Wharton this past season. It was exciting to see Brett pitch at the top of the rotation all year. We hope he can make the transition to D1 and do the same for us.”
Chris Famiglietti (CF) 6-2, 190 lbs. Cranston ,R.I. (Cranston West HS)
“Chris is great additions to our recruiting class. I expect Chris to impact our team right away. He represents our ability to attract student-athletes from all over the United States.”
Trevor Foss (RHP) 6-2, 170 lbs. Janesville, Wisc. (Janesville Craig HS)
“It was exciting to watch Trevor’s pitching session at camp,” said Malone. “He will be a tremendous addition to our staff next season. He has a ton of projectability and I expect him to have a great career as an Islander. “
Phillip Garcia (RHP) 5-11, 175 lbs. Bloomington, Texas (Bloomington HS)
“We signed Phillip out of our showcase camp. Phillip has a bright future in our program and is also a South Texas kid – we take pride in keeping the best area prospect close to home.”
Matt Holland (LHP/1B) 6-5, 220 lbs. Marion, Iowa (Iowa Central Community College)
“I hope Matt can come in and help us both on the mound and at the plate. He has the potential to be as talented as anyone on the roster and will be a big part of a successful 2009 campaign.”
Danny Lackner (OF) 6-4, 240 lbs. Long Island, N.Y. (St. Dominic HS)
“Danny is a high profile recruit that turned down many good schools to play for TAMUCC. We will count on Danny to have a strong impact on our team and hope he is a catalyst for our offense in the future.”
Jake Liedka (LHP) 6-1, 200 lbs. San Antonio, Texas (Wharton Community College)
“We are counting on Jake to come and throw a lot of inning. Jake is a strike thrower who pitches in the upper 80’s. We expect him to have a great deal of success at this level.”
Jeramie Marek (IF) 5-10, 180 lbs. Corpus Christi, Texas (Calallen HS)
“You can’t say enough about Jeramie’s leadership skills while playing shortstop for the 2008 Texas State Champions at Calallen. Jeramie will be a great player and leader for our baseball team down the road.”
Matt Mazzolla (C/1B) 6-4, 240 lbs. Bloomfield, N.J. (Bloomfield HS)
“Matt is a big, strong, athletic young man. We think Matt will really hit and be able to move around and play some different positions for us.”
Weston Montgomery (SS/RHP) 6-2, 180 lbs. Ennis, Texas (Ennis HS)
“Weston continued to get better throughout his senior year at Ennis High School. We expect Weston to compete for the starting job at shortstop his freshman year. Weston has also turned himself into a very talented prospect on the mound and there is no doubt he will see some time at both spots.”
Jeremy Narvaez (IF) 5’11, 185 lbs. Corpus Christi, Texas (Carroll HS)
“Jeremy put together a great career at Carroll High School. Jeremy was the first recruit that decided to join the Islander program in the 2008 class. He will be a great ambassador for our program for years to come.”
Brandon Orr (RHP) 6-5, 215 lbs. Tucson, Ariz, (Cochise CC)
“Brandon comes from the highly competitive Arizona J.C. circuit. He has been through the ups and downs of two full seasons at the junior college level and had a great deal of success. We are counting on Brandon to help us overcome the losses of seniors Omar Gutierrez and Brian Anderson. Brandon is a prototypical right-handed pitcher – standing at 6’5 and 215 pounds he will be an imposing force for sure. Most importantly, he is a great kid and a winner on the field.”
Matt Rocha (IF) 6-1, 180 lbs. Refugio, Texas (Refugio HS)
“Matt’s best value might be the fact he can play almost any position on the field. He is a very athletic kid that will play hard every day.”
Jared Rothenburg (LHP) 6-3, 190 lbs. Houston, Texas (Bellaire HS)
“Jared is another athlete who chose to play for us after the first the camp we held in January. We love the fact that Jared comes from a dominant Houston high school baseball program. He has a great work ethic and there is no doubt Jared knows how to win.”
Mickel Santana (IF) 6-0, 190 lbs. Bronx, N.Y. (Fordham Prep)
“Mickel’s best days of baseball are ahead of him. He has a good work ethic and athletic ability. He is another newcomer we are bringing from the Northeast in to the warm southern climate. We are expecting them to excel with the opportunity to play on a year-round basis.”
Andrew Toppert (RHP) 6-2, 230 lbs., Tampico, Ill. (Kirkwood Community College)
“We are expecting Andrew to come in and contribute right away on the mound. He has been through the ups and downs of a college season and knows the mental toughness needed to be successful.”
