The Fresno Bee is reporting that Fresno State ace Tanner Scheppers will not be returning to school this fall for his senior season. Scheppers instead has opted to play in an independent pro league in hopes of improving his draft stock for the 2009 MLB draft.
Scheppers was a second round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates but opted not to sign a contract with the team. His departure means Fresno State will be without the Bulldogs’ 2008 rotation of Justin Miller, Justin Wilson, Clayton Allison and Tanner Scheppers. The team must also replace their career saves leader Brandon Burke.
