Waynesboro defeated Luray to wrap up the top overall seed and the unsettled #7 spot went to Harrisonburg with a home victory over Covington as the regular season wrapped up in the Valley Baseball League Monday night, setting the stage for the playoffs to begin on Tuesday.
The victory by Waynesboro, an 8-7 decision in 11 innings, forced a tie for the top overall seed between the North and South division winners. VBL rules dictate that a one-game playoff break a first-place tie to determine the top seed. However, both coaches met before the game and determined that the winner of the game would take the top seed, thanks to Waynesboro’s victory giving the Generals a 4-0 head-to-head record against Luray.
Harrisonburg topped Covington 10-7 in the final regular season game at Veterans’ Memorial Stadium in Harrisonburg. The Turks jumped out to an 8-1 lead and cruised to the victory to wrap up the #7 spot in the playoffs and send the Haymarket Senators into the #8 spot.
The other four seeds were already determined heading into Monday night. The playoff field worked out that all four series will match up teams from opposite divisions.
The first round consisting of four best-of-three series will begin on Tuesday night at the home ballpark of the higher seed and will rotate home sites each night. The second round will reseed the four teams and also feature best-of-three series. The Jim Lineweaver Cup Championship Series is best-of-five. There are no off days between rounds.
