MANHATTAN, Kan. – Each Monday, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.

Coastal Plain League

Playing for the Fayetteville (N.C.) Swap Dogs, sophomore-to-be Jason King went 6-for-23 last week to raise his average… King’s best game came on Thursday in an 8-4 victory against Martinsville as he went 3-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI… King’s average now sits at .257 with six doubles, two triples, one home run and 10 RBI… Another future sophomore, Carter Jurica, went 1-for-17 last week, lowering his season average to .219 with three doubles and 14 RBI… His lone hit of the week also came against Martinsville on Thursday… The Swap Dogs, who finished the first half of the season in second place in the south division, is off to a 4-5 start to the second half.

Jayhawk Baseball League

Thomas Rooke and Daniel Dellasega have led the Nevada (Mo.) Griffons to a 20-12 this season… Rooke holds a 0-1 record and a 7.20 ERA in seven appearances, including four starts, but did not pitch last week… In 14 games, Dellasega is hitting .268 with two doubles, one home run and three RBI… The catcher has also thrown out seven base stealers in 22 attempts… Against Derby on Sunday, the junior-to-be was 1-for-3… Senior-to-be Jordan Cruz recently joined the Derby Twins and has played in two games, both against Nevada, going 1-for-4 against the Griffons on Sunday.

Texas Collegiate League

After raising his average 90 points from the week prior, junior-to-be Justin Bloxom added another 16 points to his average following a 4-for-11 performance last week… Playing for the TCL-leading McKinney Marshalls, who hold a four-game lead with an 18-11 record, Bloxom was 3-for-5 on Sunday against Brazos Valley with two RBI… He also recorded a solo home run against East Texas on Thursday… On the season, Bloxom holds a .266 average with three doubles, six home runs and 18 RBI… His six homers are tops in the TCL, three better than second place… Furthermore, his 18 RBI are third in the league… Justin Murray, who was drafted by the Oakland Athletics but has yet to sign with the club, joined the East Texas PumpJacks on June 21 … His only start last week came on Friday against McKinney as he took a no decision after allowing one run on six hits and recording eight strikeouts in 7.0 innings… The Manhattan, Kan., native is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA and 25 strikeouts… His 25 strikeouts are tied for seventh in the league after just four starts for the 14-16 PumpJacks.

West Coast Collegiate Baseball League

Senior-to-be Dane Yelovich recorded a 2-for-9 week to drop his average to .302… The second-leading hitter for the 6-17 Moses Lake Pirates is one of just two hitters better than .300… Against Spokane on Wednesday, Yelovich went 1-for-2 with one double, one run scored and a stolen base… For the season, Yelovich is hitting .302 with six doubles, 13 RBI and is 12-for-18 in stolen base attempts… Junior-to-be A.J. Morris, also playing for Moses Lake, took the loss in his only start of the week on Thursday against Wenatchee… The right hander allowed four runs – only two of which were earned – on seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts in 7.0 innings… Morris is now 1-1 on the year with a 1.91 ERA and 37 strikeouts… His 1.91 ERA is fifth best in the WCCBL, while his 37 strikeouts are second in the league… Furthermore, he is holding opponents to a .182 average, which ranks third.

Central Plains Baseball League

Future seniors Lance Hoge (pitcher) and Rob Vaughn (catcher), junior Adam Muenster (infield), sophomore Justin Lindsey (pitcher) and incoming freshman Nick Martini (outfielder) are playing with the Junction City Generals this summer, but updated statistics are not available.

M.I.N.K. League

Drew Biery, playing for the Topeka Golden Giants, was hitting .295 (13-for-44) with four doubles, two home runs and nine RBI as of June 23, but updated statistics are not available.

Walter Johnson Baseball League

Matt Giller, who redshirted the 2008 season, is playing for the 4-16 Salina Blue Jays this summer, but updated statistics are not available.

2008 Draft Picks

Ben Hornbeck: Ben Hornbeck, playing for the Vancouver Canadians in the Class A Short-Season Northwest League, bounced back from a disappointing week two weeks ago with two scoreless outings over 2.2 innings last week… Against Boise on Monday, Hornbeck allowed one hit and struck out one batter in a scoreless ninth inning… He followed that up on Saturday against Spokane when he sprayed two hits and stuck out four in 1.2 innings… A 32nd-round pick by the Oakland Athletics, Hornbeck has no record and lowered his ERA to 6.75 in 5.1 innings this season… The Canadians hold a 9-17 record and are tied for fourth in the west division.

Trevor Hurley: Trevor Hurley, just like Hornbeck, threw two scoreless appearances last week, both coming against Hornbeck’s Vancouver Canadians…On Wednesday, Hurley, a 26th-round pick by the Texas Rangers, allowed just one hit and stuck out one batter in 2.2 innings… He followed that up with a three-hit, three-strikeout performance on Sunday in 3.0 innings… On the season, Hurley is 1-0 with one save and has lowered his ERA from 6.43 to 3.55… Spokane, in the east division of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League, lead the division with a 20-6 record, four games ahead of second-place Tri-City.

Nate Tenbrink: Drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the seventh round, Nate Tenbrink went 5-for-22 with two doubles, one home run and two RBI last week … His best game of the week came on Monday when he went 2-for-2 with two walks, one double, one home run and two RBI in a 5-3 win over Yakima… In 26 games for the Everett Aqua Sox in the Class A Short-Season Northwest League, Tenbrink is hitting .214 with three doubles, four home runs and 12 RBI… His four homers are tied for third in the league, while his 12 RBI are tied for 16th… Everett is in second place in the West Division with an 11-15 record.

Byron Wiley: In three games last week, Byron Wiley went 3-for-12 with two doubles for the Billings Mustangs of the Rookie Pioneer League… A 22nd-round pick by the Cincinnati Reds, Wiley was 2-for-5 on Sunday with one double and one run scored… His season average has improved to .212 with four doubles, one triple and three RBI… Billings is tied for first in the north division with a 15-11 record.

Daniel Edwards (25th round, Philadelphia Phillies) and Justin Murray (29th round, Oakland Athletics) have not signed.

Other K-State Pros

Adam Cowart: A 2006 draft pick by San Francisco, Adam Cowart took the win in his lone start last week against Binghamton on Wednesday… The right hander threw six scoreless innings, scattering five hits, while walking two and striking out two… Cowart improved his record to 7-6 and lowered his ERA to 4.02 in 103.0 innings pitched… He is currently tied for 11th in wins and tied for 17th in ERA… Cowart and the Connecticut Defenders, the Double A affiliate for the Giants, are in third place in the Eastern League Northern Division at 48-48.

Eric Eymann: Eric Eymann, a 2005 draft pick by the Cincinnati Reds, was named a starter for the Southern League’s North Division team and will play third base and bat ninth in Monday night’s game… Playing for Double A Chattanooga, Eymann went 5-for-22 last week, including a 2-for-4 outing Saturday against Huntsville where he hit a triple and drove in one run… He also recorded a pair of RBI against Mississippi last Monday… For the season, Eymann is batting .294 with 22 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 50 RBI… He is currently tied for 10th in the Southern League in doubles, tied for 18th in triples and is 12th in RBI… The Chattanooga Lookouts are 11-14 to begin the second half of the season after finishing the first half fourth in the north.

Jared Goedert: Playing for the Kinston Indians in the Class A Advanced Carolina League, Jared Goedert was 8-for-20 last week with two doubles, one home run and seven RBI… In the second game of a doubleheader on Thursday, Goedert went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and four RBI to lead the Indians past Lynchburg… He followed that up on Friday with a 4-for-5 outing with two doubles and one run driven in… His surge last week propelled his average to .276 on the season with 17 doubles, one triple, eight home runs and 50 RBI… Kinston is currently second in the southern division with a 14-9 record in the second half, just percentage points behind division leader Myrtle Beach.

Steve Murphy: One of the best hitters in the Texas League, Steve Murphy went 5-for-20 last week with one double, one triple, one home run and four RBI… A 2005 draft pick by the Texas Rangers, Murphy recorded a pair of 2-for-4 games against Arkansas last Monday and Tuesday, driving in one run and recording a double and a triple on Monday, followed by a two-run home run on Tuesday… Murphy, who was a starter for the South Division in the Texas League All-Star Game, holds a .276 average with 24 doubles, six triples, 13 home runs and 63 RBI… He is third in the league in doubles, second in triples, ninth in home runs and sixth in RBI… Double A Frisco, which won the first half of the Texas League South Division, leads the south during the second half of the season at 15-7.

Eli Rumler: Eli Rumler, a 2007 draft pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks, went 5-for-22 last week … Playing for Class A South Bend in the Midwest League, Rumler was 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI on Saturday against the Kane County Cougars… Rumler is hitting .216 on the season with 14 doubles, one home run and 18 RBI… South Bend is one game back of first place in the eastern division with a 15-9 second-half record.

Carlos Torres: Carlos Torres was promoted to Triple A Charlotte of the International League on July 10… It is his first stint with the Triple A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, who drafted the right hander in 2004… In his first appearance with the Knights against Richmond on Saturday, Torres allowed two runs on six hits in 3.0 innings, while he struck out four batters and did not issue a walk… Before being promoted, Torres, who was playing for Double A Birmingham, was tied for first in the Southern League in wins with nine, eighth in ERA at 3.23 and tied for third in strikeouts with 92… He was also third in the league in WHIP (Walks and Hits per Innings Pitched) at 1.14… Torres was scheduled to pitch for the South Division in the 2008 Southern League All-Star Game Monday evening prior to his promotion.
