Fresno State defeated North Carolina 6-1 to secure their spot in the championship series of the 2008 College World Series. After falling 4-3 to the Tar Heels on Saturday night on a go ahead two run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning by UNC’s Chad Flack the Bulldogs bounced back to bounce out the Tar Heels giving up only one run.
For the third straight game against North Carolina, Fresno State jumped on the board first in the bottom of the third inning on a two RBI single by third baseman Tommy Mendonca. UNC cut the lead in half at 2-1 when Kyle Shelton drew a bases loaded walk with one out however, the Tar Heels weren’t able to bring any more runs across the plate.
Fresno State would answer the Tar Heel run in the bottom of the inning on a Danny Muno single that drove in Jason Ribera. The Bulldogs would add another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to give Fresno State a five run lead.
Fresno State’s Clayton Allison pitched for the first time in two weeks and threw a gem against the #2 national seed going six strong innings striking out six batters and giving up just one run on six hits. UNC used seven pitchers on the evening and Brian Moran picked up the loss giving up two runs in 1.1 innings after Fresno State had chased starter Brian Moran out of the game after just 1.2 innings.
Fresno State will now face Georgia in the championship series which begins on Monday.
