Arizona State Defeats Fresno State 12-4 In Tempe Super Regional Game One

ASU is victoriousThe Arizona State Sun Devils dispatched the Fresno State Bulldogs 12-4 in the first game of the Tempe Super Regional at Winkles Filed-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark on Saturday night.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the top of the first inning but Arizona State answered that run in the bottom of the inning. Ryan Sontag hit a two run homer in the bottom of the third inning to put the Sun Devils up 3-1.

The Sun Devils then appeared to break the game open with a five run fifth inning to go up 8-1. The Bulldogs then trimmed the lead to 8-4 after scoring one run in the seventh and two in the eighth but the Sun Devils scored four runss in the bottom of the eighth that saw Ryan Sontag hit his second home run of the game, this one also a two run homer. Up 12-4 the Sun Devils sent the Bulldogs down in order in the top of the ninth as Tommy Rafferty came in and faced three Bulldog batters, striking out two of them.

Mike Leake picked up the victory for the Sun Devils as he went 7.2 innings giving up four runs. Justin Wilson took the loss for Fresno State going 4.1 innings giving up eight runs.

The two teams will take the field again at 7:00 p.m. Pacific. The game can be seen on ESPN2. Check your local listings for which Super Regional game is available in your area.
