TUCSON, Ariz. – The 2008 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-Americans feature a wealth of baseball talent. The team is headed by Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s Freshman Pitcher of The Year LHP Chris Hernandez of the University of Miami (Fla.) and Freshman Player of The Year OF Ryan Lockwood of South Florida.
Here is a rundown on the 2008 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-Americans as chosen by Collegiate Baseball.
Starting Pitchers
LHP Chris Hernandez, Miami (Fla.) – A first team Atlantic Coast Conference pick and Louisville Slugger first team All-American, Hernandez had a monster season in being named Collegiate Baseball’s Freshman Pitcher of The Year. He posted an 11-0 record through regional action with a 2.55 ERA as he fanned 105 batters with only 15 walks. He also was named Freshman of The Year in the ACC.
LHP Shane Davis, Canisius – A first team Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference pick, Davis was named MAAC Pitcher of The Year and Rookie of The Year after posting a 12-1 record, and 2.42 ERA with 10 complete games. He also was a Louisville Slugger third team All-American for his remarkable season.
RHP Seth Maness, East Carolina – A first team Conference USA selection, Maness posted a 9-1 record, 2.87 ERA and struck out 77 batters with 18 walks in 91 innings. He was a third team Louisville Slugger All-American and also was named Freshman of The Year in Conference USA.
LHP Mario Hollands, U.C. Santa Barbara – Named Freshman of The Year in the Big West Conference, Hollands posted a 7-3 record, 4.03 ERA and fanned 61 batters.
LHP Matt Lujan, San Francisco – A first team West Coast Conference selection, Lujan was 6-2 with a 3.41 ERA as he fanned 37 batters.
RHP Brian Stroud, Western Michigan – A first team Mid-American Conference pick and Freshman of The Year in the league, Stroud posted a 6-0 record and 4.09 ERA.
RHP Chance Ruffin, Texas – Named Freshman of The Year in the Big 12 Conference and a second team league pick, Ruffin posted a 7-3 record, 1.84 ERA and posted 2 saves with 61 strikeouts and only 19 walks.
RHP Chris Haney, Dallas Baptist – Haney posted a 6-2 record and 1.95 ERA with 2 saves, 37 strikeouts and 15 walks.
LHP Cameron Roth, N.C. Wilmington – Named Rookie of The Year in the Colonial Conference, Roth was 5-1 with a 1.29 ERA late in the season with 4 saves, 30 strikeouts and only 9 walks.
LHP Dan Forman, Manhattan – Forman posted a 6-3 record with a 4.40 ERA with 1 save and 61 strikeouts.
LHP Drew Pomeranz, Mississippi – Pomeranz was 4-1 with a 3.42 ERA as he fanned 60 batters with 22 walks.
LHP Grant Dayton, Auburn – Named to the All-Freshmen team in the Southeastern Conference, Dayton was 6-1 with a 3.94 ERA. He also recorded 1 save with 54 strikeouts.
RHP Drew Permison, Towson – Permison posted a 6-0 record with 1 save, 23 strikeouts and 12 walks.
LHP Eric Jokisch, Northwestern – Named Freshman of The Year in the Big Ten Conference, Yokisch posted 8-2 record, 4.17 ERA and 4 complete game in 73 1/3 innings of work.
RHP Justin Kraft, Centenary – Kraft put together an 8-2 record with a 3.58 ERA, 46 strikeouts and 21 walks.
RHP Kevin Miller, California – An Honorable Mention pick in the Pac-10, Miller was 5-0 with a 2.22 ERA and posted 61 strikeouts and 32 walks.
RHP Sam Dyson, South Carolina – Dyson had a 5-0 record and 4.33 ERA with 26 strikeouts.
RHP Sean Hoelscher, Texas Christian – A second team Mountain West Conference selection, Hoelscher posted a 6-2 record, 3.65 ERA and 49 strikeouts with 19 walks.
RHP Chase Dempsay, Houston – Named to the All-Freshmen team for Conference USA, Dempsay posted a 5-1 record, 1.75 ERA with 8 saves. He also fanned 40 batters with 15 walks.
RHP Matt Harvey, North Carolina – Harvey recorded a 6-2 record, 2.13 ERA and fanned 51 batters with 29 walks.
RHP Colin Bates, North Carolina – Bates posted a 4-0 record with a 1.41 ERA. He fanned 44 batters with 9 walks.
RHP Dean Wolosiansky, Ohio St. – The Ohio St. pitcher posted a 6-2 record, 2.84 ERA and fanned 32 batters with 18 walks.
RHP Deck McGuire, Georgia Tech. – McGuire recorded a 7-0 record with a 3.69 ERA along with 43 strikeouts and 22 walks.
RHP Joe Yermal, N.C. Charlotte – A second team Atlantic 10 selection, Yermal posted a 7-1 record, 3.39 ERA with 36 strikeouts and 16 walks.
RHP Daniel Renken, Cal. St. Fullerton – Renken posted a 5-5 record with a 4.11 ERA and fanned 80 batters with 22 walks in 81 innings of work for the Titans.
RHP Kyle Blair, San Diego – An All-Freshmen team pick in the West Coast Conference, Blair posted a 6-3 record, 3.86 ERA and fanned 84 batters with 29 walks.
RHP Stephen Harrold, N.C. Wilmington – Named to the All-Rookie team in the Colonial Conference, Harrold posted 5 saves, a 3-2 record and a 2.89 ERA.
RHP Thain Simon, Santa Clara – Named a first team West Coast Conference pick along with being named Freshman of The Year in the league, he posted 9 wins with 71 strikeouts and a 2.59 ERA.
RHP Todd McInnis, Southern Mississippi – Named to the All-Freshman team in Conference USA, McInnis posted a 6-2 record, 5.01 ERA and fanned 66 batters with 29 walks.
RHP Drew Storen, Stanford – A first team Pac-10 selection, Storen posted 6 saves, 4-3 record and 2.90 ERA as he fanned 44 batters with 13 walks.
Relief Pitchers
Kevin Rhoderick, Oregon St. – An Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 pick, Rhoderick recorded 9 saves and a 2.79 ERA with 25 strikeouts.
Tom Girdwood, Elon – Named Freshman of The Year in the Southern Conference, Girdwood posted 9 saves, 5-1 record and a 2.78 ERA.
Thomas Rooke, Kansas St. – Rooke posted a 5-1 record, 1.15 ERA and 24 strikeouts with 9 walks.
Boone Whiting, Centenary – A first team Summit League selection, Whiting posted 5 saves with a 1.54 ERA and 27 strikeouts.
Kevin Munson, James Madison – Named to the All-Rookie team in the Colonial Conference, Munson posted 4 saves with a 0.87 ERA.
Catchers
Cameron Rupp, Texas – Rupp belted 16 doubles, 4 homers and batted .311 with 30 RBIs for the Longhorns.
Ryan Ortiz, Oregon St. – A first team All-Pac-10 selection, Ortiz hit .351 with 5 homers, 16 doubles and 55 RBIs this season for the Beavers.
C/1B Frazier Hall, Southern – Hall hit .393 with 3 homers, 9 doubles and 33 RBI.
First Basemen
Hunter Morris, Auburn – A second team Southeastern Conference pick and Freshman of The Year in the SEC, Morris hit safely in 44 of 54 games for the Tigers. He recorded 10 homers, 11 doubles and batted .360 with 40 RBI.
Jaren Matthews, Rutgers – A third team Big East Conference selection, Matthews belted 10 homers, 11 doubles and knocked in 54 runs as he hit .294.
Kevin McKague, Army – A second team Patriot League pick, he hit .328 with 3 homers, 19 doubles and 50 RBIs.
Paul Hoilman, East Tennessee St. – Named to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman team, Hoilman hit .353 with 9 homers, 16 doubles and knocked in 42 runs.
Wes Patterson, Tennessee-Martin – An All-Freshman pick in the Ohio Valley Conference, Patterson hit 10 homers with 29 RBI as he hit .297.
Trey Hernandez, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi – Hernandez hit .344 with 8 homers, 12 doubles and 43 RBIs.
Second Basemen
Josh Adams, Florida – A first team Southeastern Conference selection, Adams hit .355 with 7 homers, 17 doubles, 1 triple and 42 RBIs.
Jedd Gyorko, West Virginia – Named Rookie of The Year in the Big East Conference, Gyorko hit .411 with 7 homers and 57 RBI. He posted a 21-game hitting streak during the season.
Corey Shaylor, N.C. Charlotte – A second Team Atlantic 10 pick, Shaylor hit .373 with 2 homers, 7 doubles and 34 RBI. He only struck out 15 times in 158 at bats. Shaylor was also named Rookie of The Year in the Atlantic 10.
Thomas Belza, Oklahoma St. – A second team Big 12 Conference selection, Belza hit .402 with 6 doubles, 2 triples, 1 homer and 19 RBI.
Chad Marshall, Stony Brook – A second America East selection, Marshall hit .329 with 6 doubles, 1 triple and 20 RBI.
Shortstops
Clint Moore, Army – A first team Patriot League selection and Rookie of The Year in the league, Moore hit .350 with 6 homers, 14 doubles, 2 triples and 39 RBI with 14 stolen bases.
Blake Kelso, Houston – A member of the All-Freshmen Conference USA team, he hit .316 with 14 doubles, 3 homers 34 RBIs and swiped 14 bases.
Chris Wade, Kentucky – Wade hit .322 with 19 doubles, 4 homers and 42 RBI.
Christian Colon, Cal. St. Fullerton – An Honorable Mention Big West selection, Colon hit .335 with 4 homers, 12 doubles and 49 RBIs. He also swiped 12 of 16 bases.
Derek Dietrich, Georgia Tech. – A second team Atlantic Coast Conference pick, Dietrich hit .339 with 14 homers, 13 doubles, 1 triple and 56 RBI.
Josh Rutledge, Alabama – An All-SEC Freshmen Team selection, Rutledge hit .389 with 6 doubles, 2 triples and 23 RBI.
Kevin Tokarski, Illinois St. – Named Freshman off The Year in the Missouri Valley Conference, Tokarski hit .324 with 7 doubles, 1 triple, 15 RBIs and swiped 32 bases.
Matt Duffy, Vermont – Named to the All-Rookie Team in the America East Conference, Duffy hit .313 with 16 doubles, 3 homers and 26 RBI.
Mike Olt, Connecticut – Olt hit .314 with 9 homers, 10 doubles and 42 RBI. He also swiped 16 bases.
Rick Hague, Rice – Named to the All-Freshmen Conference USA Team, Hague hit .331 with 7 homers, 14 doubles and 41 RBI.
Riley Henricks, Portland – A first team West Coast Conference pick, Henricks hit .343 with 8 homers, 15 doubles and 25 RBI.
Taylor Black, Charleston Southern – Black hit .344 with 5 homers, 16 doubles and 31 RBI.

Matt Pace, Arkansas-Pine Bluff – Named Freshman of The Year in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, Pace hit .369 with 5 homers, 23 doubles and 40 RBI.
Robert Crews, Stetson – Freshman off The Year in the Atlantic Sun and a second team Atlantic Sun selection, Crews hit .367 with 6 homers and 10 stolen bases.
Ryan Pineda, Cal. St. Northridge – Named Freshman of The Year in the Big West Conference, Pineda hit .325 with 17 doubles and 32 RBIs. He also was an Honorable Mention Big West selection.
Ryan Terry, Monmouth – Named Rookie of The Year in the Northeast Conference and a second team All-Conference pick, Terry hit .342 with 5 homers, 10 doubles and 26 RBI.
Scott Woodward, Coastal Carolina – A first team Big South Conference pick who was named Freshman off The Year in the league, Woodward hit .352 with 35 stolen bases, 42 walks and 64 runs scored. He also was hit by pitches 25 times.
Rob Segedin, Tulane – A second team Conference USA selection, Segedin hit .359 with 6 homers, 18 doubles and 56 RBI.
Jayson Langfels, Eastern Kentucky – A member of the All-Freshmen Ohio Valley team, Langfels hit .304 with 4 homers, 10 doubles and 37 RBI.
Mason Heyne, Rider – Heyne hit .344 with 5 homers, 14 doubles and 34 RBI.
Stuart Tapley, Florida St. – Tapley hit .366 with 8 doubles, 3 homers and 17 RBIs for the Seminoles.
Outfielders
Ryan Lockwood, South Florida – A first team Big East selection, Lockwood was also named Collegiate Baseball’s Freshman Player of The Year after hitting .415 with 15 doubles, 37 RBIs and stealing 12 of 16 bases. He also had a 30-game hitting streak. He was the first freshman in Big East history to lead the league in batting average (.454) with conference games only factored in.
Ben Klafcznski, Kent St. – Klafcznski hit .339 with 11 homers, 11 doubles and 35 RBI. He also was fourth in the Mid-American Conference with a .630 slugging percentage.
Brian Fletcher, Auburn – Fletcher, a member of the All-Freshmen Southeastern Conference team, hit .306 with 6 homers, 11 doubles, 3 triples and 28 RBIs.
Casey McMurray – McMurray hit .331 with 10 doubles, 21 RBI and swiped 4 bases.
Connor Bernatz, San Francisco – Named to the All-Freshmen West Coast Conference team, Bernatz hit .373 with 10 doubles, 2 homers and 26 RBI.
Dan Grovatt, Virginia – Grovatt hit .354 with 18 doubles, 3 homers, 1 triple and 39 RBI.
Greg Wallace, Evansville – Wallace hit .322 with 16 doubles, 2 homers and 28 RBI.
