ATHENS, Ga. — The Bisons of Lipscomb University were the story of the day, as the 151st ranked team in the RPI defeated the national #8 seed Georgia 10-7 at Foley Field. The win marked the first NCAA tournament victory for Lipscomb University in any sport.
Catcher Caleb Joseph, left fielder Blake Bratcher, and first baseman Ryan Wilkins each homered for the Bisons. Bratcher and Wilkins each had 3 RBIs for Lipscomb. Rex Brothers earned the victory for Lipscomb, giving up only 2 earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Georgia’s starting pitcher Stephen Dodson fell to 5-4 on the season, giving up 8 earned runs in 4 2/3 innings pitched. Ryan Peisel led the Bulldogs, going 3-for-5 with a home run.
Lipscomb will face Georgia Tech in the winners’ bracket on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets defeated Louisville 8-5 Friday evening. Catcher Jason Haniger led the Yellow Jackets, going 3-for-4 with a 2-run home run. Right fielder Charlie Blackmon also contributed 3 hits for Georgia Tech. Starter David Duncan had a no-decision; relief pitcher Andrew Robinson worked 2 2/3 innings to earn the victory and improve to 4-2.
For Louisville, second baseman Justin McClanahan led the offense, going 3-for-4 with 2 home runs. Starter Justin Marks took only his second loss of the season, falling to 9-2. Louisville will face Georgia in an elimination game at 3pm Saturday.
