WAC Weekend Recap for May 16th-18th

Fresno State and Sacramento State split their weekend series over the weekend. The Hornets took the opening game on Friday night 9-8 on a walk-off grand slam by freshman Brent Hottman. On Saturday the two teams split the doubleheader with the Hornets picking up game one 4-0 and Fresno State taking game two 6-4. With the 6-4 victory the Bulldogs wrapped up their third straight WAC title. On Sunday the Bulldogs took the series finale 13-6.

The Bulldogs are now 33-27 overall and 21-11 in conference play while the Hornets are 23-32 and 14-17 in conference.

The two teams will face each other in the opening round of this week’s conference tournament. The Bulldogs are the 1-seed and the Hornets are the 6-seed.

Nevada at San Jose State
The Nevada Wolf Pack ventured to San Jose to end the regular season and had a shot at winning the league’s regular season title. The Pack got the help they needed from Sacramento State however Nevada was swept over the weekend. The Spartans took the opening game on Friday night 7-4. The Spartans took both games of Saturday’s doubleheader 2-0 and 11-2. The Spartans completed the sweep on Sunday by taking down the Pack 8-7.

The Spartans improved their record to 31-23 and 17-14 in conference play while the sweep drops the Wolf Pack to 31-24 and 18-14 in conference play.

The losses dropped the Wolf Pack from a possible 1-seed down to the 3-seed for the upcoming WAC tournament. The Spartans secured the 4-seed in the tournament and the two teams will face each other in the opening day of the tournament.

Louisiana Tech at New Mexico State
The Aggies and Bulldogs split their series with the Bulldogs taking game one of the Friday doubleheader 5-4 and New Mexico State taking game two of the doubleheader 14-11. On Saturday the Bulldogs took game two 7-6 and on Sunday the Aggies took the series finale 15-13.

The Aggies end the regular season 28-31 overall and 15-17 in conference play. The Bulldogs end their season at 23-31 and 7-23 in conference play. The Bulldogs will not be participating in this week’s conference tournament which is being held in Ruston, LA, home of Louisiana Tech.

The Aggies secured the 5-seed in this week’s WAC tournament and will face 2-seed Hawai’i in the opening round on Thursday.

Utah Valley State College at Hawai’i
The Warriors hosted the Wolverines for one final non-conference series before heading to the conference tournament. The Warriors dropped two of three in the series falling 5-1 on Friday night, winning 9-6 on Saturday and then dropping the final game on Saturday 2-0. The Warriors are now 27-28 overall and 18-14 in conference play.

Despite being out of conference on the final weekend of play the Warriors moved up from the 3-seed to the 2-seed in this week’s tournament. The Nevada Wolf Pack entered the weekend ahead of the Warriors for 2nd place but was swept by San Jose State. The Warriors and Wolf Pack finished with an identical conference record of 18-14 but the Warriors defeated the Wolf Pack three out of four times in their series in Honolulu to earn the tiebreaker over the Pack.
