PHILADELPHIA (5/12/08) – Saint Joseph’s senior Jeremy Jakubowski (Jarrettsville, MD / Calvert Hall) and Villanova senior Bill Hoffman (Hopewell Junction, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) have been named the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, in voting conducted by the schools’ head coaches and sports information offices.
Jakubowski batted .588 (10-for-17) in four games last week for the Hawks and drove in seven runs. He posted his first four-hit game of the season on Tuesday against Rider and also knocked in three runs. On Senior Day on Sunday, the senior had three hits, including a triple, and had two RBI. He leads the team in hits (50) and runs (32) and is second in RBI (30).
Hoffman tossed a complete-game eight hitter in a 2-1 win over Rutgers on Sunday to help the Wildcats’ chances of making the Big East Tournament. He allowed just one earned run and struck out eight batters in the second complete game by a Villanova pitcher all season.
Formed with the mission of increasing the exposure of college baseball in the area, Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball is comprised of the five Division I universities in Philadelphia that sponsor baseball. The Big 5 will announce a Player and Pitcher of the Week every Tuesday during the season. The third annual All-Big 5 baseball team will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
