PHILADELPHIA (5/6/08) – Temple senior Stan Orzechowski (Philadelphia, PA / Northeast Catholic) and La Salle freshman Sean Kennedy (Vineland, NJ / Sacred Heart) have been named the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, in voting conducted by the schools’ head coaches and sports information offices.
Orzechowski batted .526 (10-for-19) with five RBI in four games last week for the Owls. He also led the team with eight runs scored and added a double and home run. The senior started the week with a career-high five hits on Wednesday against Lafayette and was 3-for-5 with three RBI on Saturday against George Washington. He raised his average from .262 to .292 by hitting safely over the past six games.
Kennedy threw his first career complete game, allowing just one earned run in a 6-1 victory at St. Bonaventure on Sunday. He scattered eight hits with just three coming over the last six innings. He is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA over his past 16 innings in conference play.
Formed with the mission of increasing the exposure of college baseball in the area, Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball is comprised of the five Division I universities in Philadelphia that sponsor baseball. The Big 5 will announce a Player and Pitcher of the Week every Tuesday during the season. The third annual All-Big 5 baseball team will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
