Game 1: Northeastern 8 Hofstra 5
Mike Lyon hit a career-high three home runs and drove in six runs, leading the Huskies to an 8-5 win against Hofstra in game one of a doubleheader at Friedman Diamond Saturday afternoon. Lyon’s third homer of the game gave the Huskies the walk-off win in what was a seven-inning contest.
Other than Lyon, Mike Tamsin and David Gustafson helped pace the Husky offense. Tamsin went 3-4 and scored a run, while Gustafson finished 2-3 with an RBI-double. Tony DiCesare also chipped in with an RBI-double to complete the Husky offensive attack.
Ryan Quigley started for the Huskies and was solid overall, as he went six innings and allowed seven hits, four runs and two walks to go along with five strikeouts. Sheldon McDonald worked an inning of relief and picked up the win, improving to 8-1 on the season.
Lyon’s three home runs in the game gave him 12 on the season, passing his 2007 total of 10. It also gave him 30 home runs in his career, moving him into a tie for fourth place all time in Northeastern history with Derek Gauthier (1992-95).
The Huskies improved to 18-22-1 on the season and 8-14-1 in the CAA with the win, while Hofstra dropped to 18-32 overall and 6-20 in the CAA.
Game 2: Northeastern 6 Hofstra 2
The Northeastern University baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep against Hofstra with a 6-2 win at Friedman Diamond on Saturday afternoon. The game featured two historical feats, as Frank Pesanello tied the Northeastern single-season record with his 15th home run of the season and Sheldon McDonald started the game and picked up his second win of the day after earning a win in the first game of the day in relief.
While Pesanello’s record-tying blast to left center highlighted the Husky offense, Mike Tamsin, Mike Lyon, Frank Compagnone and James Donaldson each picked up two hits in the game as NU finished with 12 hits in the game to Hofstra’s five.
McDonald went 5-1/3 to pick up his second win of the day and allowed five hits, two runs and one walk to go along with six strikeouts. He improved to 9-1 on the season with the win and is one win shy of tying Peter Shultz’s Husky record of 10 wins in a single season. Kris Dabrowiecki was sensational out of the ’pen for the Huskies, tossing 3-2/3 no-hit innings to close out the game for the Huskies to earn his first save since 2005. The only base runners he allowed were on two walks, as he struck out four in the relief effort.
Northeastern improved to 19-22-1 overall and 9-14-1 in the CAA with the win, while Hofstra dropped to 18-33 on the season and 6-21 in the conference. The Huskies are back in action on Monday when they travel to the University of Massachusetts for a 3 p.m., non-conference game.
LSU 3 Kentucky 1 (10 inn.)
Playing the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, the LSU baseball team put together three consecutive two-out hits in the top of the 10th inning to fight past No. 18 Kentucky, 3-1, in Cliff Hagan Stadium.
Jared Bradford (8-4) earned the win after pitching perfect innings in the ninth and 10th, tossing only 17 pitches.
However, it was starter Ryan Verdugo who put the Tigers in position to win by throwing eight innings of three-hit ball. Kentucky only scored an unearned run off Verdugo. He struckout seven with three walks.
After consecutive strikeouts by 6-foot-8 Kentucky reliever Scott Green to start the 10th inning, LSU’s Chris McGhee singled through the left side and scored the go-ahead run on Michael Hollander’s double. Hollander then came around to score on another single by Derek Helenihi to give the Tigers a 3-1 advantage.
Kentucky went down in order against Bradford in the bottom of the 10th.
Game 2: LSU 12 Kentucky 5
LSU opened a 7-0 lead in the first three frames with the help of four unearned runs to defeat Kentucky in game 2 of the Saturday doubleheader at Cliff Hagan Stadium in Lexington, Ky., 12-5.
Though the Wildcats cut the margin to 7-3 in the bottom of the third against LSU starter Blake Martin, LSU responded with two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the seventh to keep the pressure on the Wildcats’ bullpen.
Martin (3-3) earned the win for LSU with five solid innings, while Bradford entered in relief to shut down Kentucky over the final four innings. Bradford, who earned the win in with two perfect innings in the first game of the twin-bill, gave up only two hits, hit a batter and struck out four.
Kentucky used six pitchers with the starter James Paxton (3-3) taking the loss despite throwing only six pitches – all balls – to open the game.
Offensively, Derek Helenihi, Blake Dean, Sean Ochinko and Jared Mitchell each collected two hits in the 13-hit attack for LSU. Ochinko hit a home run, while Helenihi added a triple. Game-one hero Michael Hollander scored three times and had a double in a 1-for-4 performance.
