AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward’s took two games from Texas A&M International Friday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Hilltoppers grabbed a game one victory, 1-0, and defeated the Dustdevils again in the second contest, 3-2.

In game one, St. Edwards (36-15, 34-11 HC) was locked in a fierce pitchers dual with Texas A&M International (18-33, 16-28 HC). Hilltopper starter Josh Dale (7-1) threw a complete game shutout, allowing only seven hits and striking out four Dustdevil hitters.

Texas A&M International starter Paul Routos was almost as good as Dale, also notching a complete game. He did throw one pitch he would have liked to have back though. That pitch came in the fifth inning when left fielder Bradley Goldsmith blasted a solo home run over the left field fence. This was all the offense the Hilltoppers needed as they went on to win the game, 1-0.

In game two, St. Edward’s struck first. Catcher Adam Wolotira got the Hilltoppers on the board with a solo home run in the second inning. St. Edward’s scored two more runs in the third inning. Right fielder Sean Hilbe and first baseman Dexter Moreno each contributed RBI singles in the inning.

The Dustdevils got two runs back in the sixth inning when first baseman Danny Cornejo crushed a two run home run to left field.

Texas A&M International could never really get it going against the Hilltopper pitching staff. Starter Bret Freimel (7-2) worked six solid innings, allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out seven Dustdevil hitters. After Brent Davis pitched two scoreless innings of relief, David Wagner worked out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth inning by inducing a game-ending double play to secure the, 3-2, victory for St. Edward’s. This effort earned Wagner his fourteenth save of the season.

The Hilltoppers will be back in action Saturday as they conclude this weekend series against Heartland Conference opponent Texas A&M International. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
