NORFOLK, VA–Chris Keenan (Chesapeake, VA.) and Anthony Shawler (Chesapeake, Va.) both knocked in three runs and Ryan Bergh (Reddick, FL.) pitched a complete game as Old Dominion (21-21/12-10) defeated Northeastern (16-20-1/ 8-13-1), 7-3 Sunday afternoon. The Monarchs sweep the three-game CAA series.
Northeastern scored two runs in the first inning when Mike Lyon tripled home Mike Tamsin, then scored on an ODU throwing error.
In the bottom of the second Bryan Cipolla’s (Plainview, NY.) groundout plated Jimmy Miles from third to make it 2-1. Cipolla now has a team best 47 runs batted in. ODU took the lead for good in the third on Anthony Shawler’s seventh homerun of the season with Cipolla and Chris Keenan aboard.
In the fourth inning Chris Keenan’s sacrifice fly scored Max Most (Port Washington, NY.) to make if 5-2, but Northeastern got a run back in the seventh on back-to-back doubles by David Gustafson and James Donaldson.
ODU’s final two runs came in the eighth on a Chris Keenan two-out single which scored Gerard Hall (Washington, DC.) and Edgar Hernandez (Puerto Rico). Keenan finished with three hits on the day, and David Burns (Jacksonville, FL.) had two hits. Jimmy Miles stole his CAA leading 32nd base in the first inning. Miles came into the week ranked third nationally.
This was Ryan Bergh’s (5-4) fourth complete CAA game of the season. He fanned eight with just one walk and seven hits. ODU pitchers allowed Northeastern only three runs in the three game series which include shutouts on Friday and Saturday.
ODU breaks for exams and will not return to action until May 7 when they host Radford in a doubleheader.
