UC Irvine Edges Past Kansas State

, Kan. Josh Tavelli drove in two runs and starter Matt Dufour pitched 4.2 innings of hitless baseball as UC Irvine defeated Kansas State, 4-3, Tuesday at Tointon Stadium. The Anteaters improved to 25-9 overall with the win while Kansas State dropped to 18-21.

Tavelli was 2 for 4, putting the Anteaters on the board in the top of the second with a single to score Tony Asaro, who doubled to right field. Tavelli then drove a 2-1 offering in the fourth over the left-field fence for his first home run of the season, giving the Anteaters a 3-0 lead.

Eric Deragisch, (2 for 3), delivered the eventual game-winning run in the UCI eighth. With the Anteaters holding on to a 3-2 edge, Kansas State issued a leadoff walk to Francis Larson and intentionally walked Dillon Bell with two outs. Deragisch drove Trevor Hurley’s 1-0 pitch up the middle to score pinch-runner Sean Madigan.

Kansas State scored twice in the sixth off reliever Cole Hathcock on RBI hits from Jordan Cruz and Nate Tenbrink. The Wildcats cut into the lead again at 4-3 with an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth off Scott Gorgen, who made his first relief appearance of the season. However, Gorgen retired the next four batters before handing the ball off to Eric Pettis in the ninth. Pettis retired the final two batters to log his ninth save of the season.

Ben Orloff batted 2 for 4 with two stolen bases while Jeff Cusick also registered an RBI on 1 for 5 hitting.

Dufour improved to 1-1, striking out four and walking four in a pre-determined start. Tom Calahan provided 1.2 innings of scoreless relief while Gorgen struck out one in 1.1 innings.

Wildcat starter Lance Hoge, dropped to 1-4 after giving up three earned runs on six hits in four innings.
