SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The 12th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team ran their winning streak to a season-high 11 games with a 6-0 win over Saint Mary’s College behind a strong pitching performance from junior All-American pitcher Josh Romanski and another solid offensive output Saturday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium.
With the win, the Toreros improve their overall record to 30-11, move to 9-2 in the WCC, have now strung together 11 straight wins and they claim the series over SMC. With the loss, the Gaels fall to 20-15-1 overall and 4-7 in the WCC.
Romanski (7-0) looked impressive on the mound for the Toreros as he allowed no runs on five hits, while striking out five in 7.0 innings of work. Brandon Berl (3-4) was saddled with the loss for the Gaels as he allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits in 3.1 innings of work.
USD wasted no time in scoring as in the second inning the Toreros scored one run on two hits. Victor Sanchez led off the inning by reaching on an error by the Gaels third baseman. Sanchez then advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a Kevin Hansen single up the middle. Jose Valerio then grounded into a double play, which brought in Sanchez to give USD a 1-0 lead.
The Toreros then added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning. Sean Nicol led off the frame with a single up the middle and James Meador then launched a two-run blast over the left field fence to push the Torero advantage to three. Romanski then kept things rolling with a single to centerfield and moved to second on the fourth consecutive Torero hit of the inning, a Logan Gelbrich single through the left side. After each runner moved up one base on a Sanchez sacrifice bunt, Kevin Hansen drove in Romanski with a sacrifice fly to left field to cap the scoring for the inning and give USD a 4-0 lead.
he Toreros then put the game out of reach in the bottom of the seventh inning as they scored two runs on two hits. Nicol got things started with a single through the left side and Meador then drove in Nicol with a run-scoring triple down the right field line. Romanski then brought in Meador with a sacrifice bunt to put the game at its final of 6-0.
Offensively for the Toreros, Meador led the way as he went 2-for-4 with one home run, one triple and three RBI. Nicol, Hansen and Tony Strazzara were the three other Toreros to record multiple hits on the afternoon.
