UMass 4 BC 3

BOSTON, Mass. – For the first time since 2000, UMass (11-14) won the Beanpot Championship by defeating the Boston College Eagles (18-18), 4-3, behind a fantastic pitching performance from Mike DiCato (Winthrop, Mass.) on Tuesday afternoon at Fenway Park. DiCato took a no-hitter into the ninth inning before allowing a bloop single with no outs. The Eagles looked to make a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, but Mitchell Eilenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) shut down the Eagle’s offense by retiring the final two batters of the game for his second save of the season. BC’s starter, Kevin Moran, struggled in the top of the first, allowing three runs to give UMass a 3-0 lead. Brian Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.) and Jim Macdonald (Cheshire, Conn.) each finished with two hits for UMass.

Northeastern 7 Harvard 6 (10 innings)

Mike Lyon hit a walk-off single scoring Tony DiCesare from second base with two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning, as the Northeastern University baseball team defeated Harvard in the consolation game of the Beanpot at Fenway Park on Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies are now 19-17 all time in Beanpot contests.

It was a back-and fourth game throughout, with several lead changes and ties occuring in the contest. Mike Tamsin and Lyon provided much of the offensive punch for the Huskies in the game, each recording three hits on the day. Tamsin slapped three singles, was intentially walked twice and scored a run, while Lyon finished 3-6 with an RBI-double and a run scored to go along with the game-winning single.
