FROM BIG 5 BASEBALL
PHILADELPHIA (4/14/08) – La Salle senior Mike Dertouzos (North Wales, PA / North Penn) and Temple senior Mike Mongiardini (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East / Yale) have been named the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, in voting conducted by the schools’ head coaches and sports information offices.
Dertouzos, a career .200 hitter, batted .583 (7-for-12) with four RBI in three games this week against Atlantic 10 leader Duquesne. He had at least two hits in all three games, including three hits to help La Salle hand the Dukes their first conference loss of the season. He is batting .269 with a home run and 15 RBI this season.
Mongiardini did not allow an earned run in 5.1 innings of three-hit baseball to lead Temple to an 11-1 win over Richmond on Sunday. The southpaw struck out three batters and walked just one to help the Owls to their first series victory over the Spiders since UR joined the Atlantic 10 in 2002. The senior is now 2-2 with a 4.60 ERA this season.
Formed with the mission of increasing the exposure of college baseball in the area, Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball is comprised of the five Division I universities in Philadelphia that sponsor baseball. The Big 5 will announce a Player and Pitcher of the Week every Tuesday during the season. The third annual All-Big 5 baseball team will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
