FROM BIG 5 RELEASE
PHILADELPHIA (4/8/08) – Villanova junior Joe Cotter (Bryn Mawr, PA / Pottsgrove) and La Salle freshman Kevin Fuqua (Derwood, MD / Avalon School) have been named the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, in voting conducted by the schools’ head coaches and sports information offices.

Cotter batted .563 with seven RBI to lead the Wildcats to a perfect 5-0 week, including a Big East sweep of Georgetown. Cotter added two doubles, two home runs and slugged 1.063 in five games past week. He became the first player in the five-year history of the Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth to have a multi-homer game when he blasted a pair of long-balls in a Big 5 win over La Salle.

Fuqua was two outs away from his second complete-game shutout of the season in an 8-1 win over Saint Louis on Sunday. He allowed one earned run in nine innings against the Billikens and struck out eight. He sported a 1.98 ERA for the week to earn his second Big 5 Pitcher of the Week honor.

Formed with the mission of increasing the exposure of college baseball in the area, Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball is comprised of the five Division I universities in Philadelphia that sponsor baseball. The Big 5 will announce a Player and Pitcher of the Week every Tuesday during the season. The third annual All-Big 5 baseball team will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
