TCU rallies for three in the ninth, tops Air Force, 3-2

FORT WORTH, Texas – Trailing by two runs in the bottom of the ninth, the TCU Horned Frogs put together a furious rally, scoring three times to complete the sweep of Air Force. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Bryan Holaday singled through the right side bringing in the tying runs. Brett Medlin scored the winning run on an errant throw by the right fielder. The win gives the Frogs five straight victories.

Clint Arnold worked a lead-off walk in the ninth inning to spark the Frog rally. Chris Ellington doubled to left field to put runners on second and third. A four-pitch walk to Steve Ellington loaded the bases, ending relief pitcher Mike Ruvolo’s afternoon.

Holaday drove the ball through the right side on the first offering from Alex Truesdale bringing in the tying runs. Right fielder Chay Derbigny’s throw skipped past the catcher allowing pinch runner Brett Medlin to score from first with the winning run.

Up to that point Air Force pitcher Jake Petro had kept the Horned Frogs on their heels, limiting them to just three hits through eight innings. He gave up a one-out single in the third to Jimmie Pharr, but retired the next two batters to end the inning. A one-out single from Clint Arnold was erased on a double play ball. Matt Carpenter’s two-out double was wasted in the fifth inning.

The Falcons had taken the lead in the fourth inning, scoring two unearned runs after a lead-off error. K.J. Randhawa reached on a fielding error by Bryan Kervin. Addison Gentry walked two put two runners on with nobody out. TCU starter Greg Holle got a big strikeout before a bloop single to left by Matt Alexander to give Air Force a 1-0 lead. Daniel Walker reached on an infield single to load the bases. The second run crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice.

TCU had a golden opportunity to cut into the Falcon lead in the seventh inning after a lead-off walk to Arnold. Petro retired the next two batters before Holaday reached on an error by the second baseman. Petro worked out of the jam getting a pop out to end the inning.

For the Frogs, Greg Holle got a no-decision after 6 1/3 innings pitched. He gave up two unearned runs on five hits. He walked a batter and struck out one. Trent Appleby pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief. He didn’t allow a hit, hit two batters and struck out one. Andrew Cashner (5-1) picked up the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings. He struck out three and walked one.

TCU improves to 19-12 on the season and 5-4 in the conference. The Frogs will hit the road for one game Tuesday night at Baylor. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
