BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the second straight and the third time in four weeks, the Ouachita Baptist baseball program received a top honor as senior first baseman Destan Makonnen was selected Tuesday the Gulf South Conference West Division Player of the Week.

Senior catcher earned the honor twice in a three-week span and was the recipient of the award last week.

For Makonnen, who is a native of Grand Rapids, Mich., the first baseman batted .357 in a four-game span with an on-base percentage of 1.214.

He opened the week by scoring a run in the first game of a doubleheader against UAH, but really broke loose with an offensive onslaught in a doubleheader series against rival Henderson.

Makonnen belted a pair of three-run home runs in the opener of a 15-2 win against Henderson State. He followed that performance with a grand slam home run, solo homer and a base hit to atone for another six runs batted in to finish the weekend going 5-for-8 with four home runs and 12 RBIs.

Ouachita Baptist, ranked No. 22, plays a doubleheader at LaGrave Field, home of the Fort Worth Cats, 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 2 against Tarleton State. The games will be available on the Ouachita Baptist athletic Web site at: www.obutigers.com.
