PHILADELPHIA (4/1/08) – Temple junior Sean Barksdale (Glenolden, PA / Cardinal O’Hara) and Saint Joseph’s sophomore Randy Mower (Hatfield, PA / North Penn) have been named the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, in voting conducted by the schools’ head coaches and sports information offices.
Barksdale batted .333 and had a team-high eight RBI to lead Temple to a Liberty Bell Classic victory over La Salle and an A-10 series win at Saint Joseph’s last week. Three of his six hits went for extra bases, including two homeruns. He blasted his first career grand slam in a 13-2 win at SJU on Friday.
Mower tossed 11 shutout innings in two starts last week, including a complete-game shutout of Temple in a 3-0 win on Saturday. He allowed only six hits for the week and struck out eight. It was the Hawks’ first complete-game shutout since May 20, 2005. Mower also earned Atlantic 10 Co-Pitcher of the Week honors.
Formed with the mission of increasing the exposure of college baseball in the area, Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball is comprised of the five Division I universities in Philadelphia that sponsor baseball. The Big 5 will announce a Player and Pitcher of the Week every Tuesday during the season. The third annual All-Big 5 baseball team will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
