BROOKLINE, Mass. – Leftfielder Sam Shaughnessy fielded a base hit and fired to third baseman Eric Campbell who relayed the ball to Tony Sanchez to gun down the potential tying run at home plate in the bottom of the eighth inning to help Boston College hold on and defeat Northeastern 8-7 on Tuesday afternoon at Freidman Diamond.
Northeastern’s Mike Tamsin hit a two-out double in the eighth of BC reliever Ted Ratliff. Mike Lyon followed with a base hit to left field that Tamsin attempted to score and tie the game. The 7-5-2 putout at the plate kept the Eagles ahead and they escaped with a one run win. Mike Belfiore struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth to secure the victory.
Every BC starter recorded at least one hit as the team totaled 11 on the afternoon, including three home runs. Mike Sudol made a strong contribution in his first start of the season. The sophomore went 2-for-3 with two doubles, with one RBI and one run scored. Campbell was the other starter to collect a multi-hit game, with a 2-for-5 day at the plate.
Sanchez, Shaughnessy and Mickey Wiswall each collected homers to help the Eagles improve to 12-14 overall this season. The homer for Sanchez extended his hit streak to 23 games.
Pat Dean (2-1) worked 1.2 innings of relief to earn the victory. Ted Ratliff pitched 1.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts, while Belfiore worked a perfect ninth with three strikeouts to earn his second save of the season.
In the bottom of the second, the Huskies hit two home runs, which contributed three runs, off BC starter Kevin Moran. Frank Pesanello hit a two-run blast to left-center field, and two batters later, Brendon Stokes hit a solo homer to center field to give Northeastern the lead.
BC erupted for four runs in the top of the fourth, all coming off home runs to take its first lead of the game, 4-3. Sanchez hit a solo homer to left field to start the frame. Campbell followed with an infield single, before Wiswall clubbed a two-run deep fly to left field. Later in the inning, Shaughnessy hit an opposite field homer to left to round out the inning for the Eagles.
Northeastern tied the score in the fourth, 4-4, on a RBI single by Dave Fisher. Moran got out frame without further damage by enticing a ground ball double play to end the inning.
In the fifth, the Eagles pushed across two runs to make the score 6-4. Sudol started the inning with a double down the left field line. Sudol would score on a fielding error by Northeastern, hit by Butera. The next batter, Belfiore, hit a line drive through the right side to plate Butera and give BC the two run advantage.
A wild pitch from reliever Pat Dean allowed Northeastern’s Mike Lyon to score and make the score 6-5.
A two-out RBI double by Sudol in the sixth pushed the Eagles’ lead back up to two runs at 7-5.
BC threatened again in the seventh off Huskies’ reliever Sheldon McDonald. Sanchez started the rally with a walk. Campbell followed with a single to left field to put Eagles on the corners. A wild pitch by McDonald allowed Sanchez to score to up the lead, 8-5.
Pesanello cut the deficit to one run with a two-run homer to right field in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 8-7.
In the eighth inning, Mike Lyon hit a two-out single to left field that looked to have tied the game, but Shaughnessy fired a strike to Campbell who relayed the ball to Sanchez at home plate for a bang-bang put out to end the inning.
