FROM PRESS RELEASE
IRVING, Texas — Doug Thennis (Texas Tech) and Lance Hoge (Kansas State) have earned the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week honors, respectively, for games of March 24-30 in voting by a media panel. Thennis is recognized for the second time in his career while it is the first weekly accolade for Hoge.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Doug Thennis, Texas Tech, OF/1B, Sr., Cirrus Heights, Calif./Sacramento City College
Thennis led the Red Raiders to their first-ever series victory against an opponent ranked No. 2 in the nation last weekend. Tech defeated the Tigers in 2-of-3 games played in Lubbock.
He plated the tying run in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI single on Saturday, and Tech went on to win that game 3-2. In the finale on Sunday, he hit a walk-off grand slam home run to give the Red Raiders a 15-11 come-from-behind victory. He was 3-for-3 with a career-high six RBI in the series clincher.
On the weekend, Thennis went 5-for-10 with seven RBI while drawing two walks and was hit once.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Lance Hoge, Kansas State, LHP, Jr., Stillwell, Kan./Cowley County CC
Hoge pitched a complete-game shutout on Sunday against No. 22 Oklahoma State, the Big 12’s leading offensive attack heading into this weekend’s action. He allowed just three hits, issued no walks and struck out five Cowboys in 107 pitches. His performance guided KSU to its first series win over OSU since 2000. It was the Wildcats’ second complete-game shutout of the season and Hoge’s inaugural victory. The junior retired the side in order five times and allowed just one hit to go for extra bases (double).
