The College Baseball Blog made the trip down to Storrs Connecticut on Sunday to see the rubber game between the Villanova Wildcats and UConn Huskies. The Huskies won Game 1 on Friday by a score of 12-1 before losing Game 2 7-2.
The UConn Huskies jumped on Wildcat starter Chris Pack for five runs in the first inning knocking him out of the game after only recording two outs. The inning was highlighted when UConn’s Pat Mahoney hit a two run homer to start the scoring. Villanova brought in Josh Eidell as he kept them in the game by only allowing one run in his five innings of work. The UConn offense was led by the Olt brothers from Branford Connecticut. Older brother Brad Olt got the start at designated hitter where he went 2-5 with 3 RBI including a big double. Mike Olt who is a freshman on the Uconn squad went 2-5 with one run and one RBI on the day including two stolen bases. Dan Terpak led the Wildcats with 2 RBI as he went 1-3.
The Villanova coaching staff made a ton of odd moves throughout the game with them trailing 5-0 in the second inning, the coaching staff called for a sacrifice bunt which was horrendous and ended up getting the lead runner thrown out. This struck me as a very odd move to be playing for one run in a five run game in the second inning when your in the middle of your lineup.
