NORMAN, Okla. — J.T. Wise’s one-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th plated pinch runner Doug Buser and gave Oklahoma a 3-2 victory over 20th-ranked Baylor in Saturday afternoon’s Big 12 Conference game at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Baylor (15-9, 2-6) has lost five consecutive Big 12 games and seven straight league road games, dating back to last season.
Baylor led 2-1 with one out in the ninth when Jamie Johnson laced a line-drive home run just over the wall in left. That pushed the game to extra innings. After Oklahoma (20-7-1, 2-2-1) retired the Bears in order in the top of the 10th, Mike Gosse led off the bottom of the inning with a double to right-center. Aljay Davis moved the pinch runner Buser to third, and the Bears intentionally walked Aaron Baker to put runners on the corners.
Wise ripped Craig Fritsch’s 2-1 offering down the third-base line; the ball glanced off the glove of Shaver Hansen, who never had a legitimate chance to make the catch.
That made a winner of Ryan Duke (4-2), who retired all five batters he faced with three strikeouts. Duke earned the victory, getting the Sooners out of a jam in the top of the ninth that proved to be the difference in the game.
Dustin Dickerson led off the ninth with a double down the line in right. Raynor Campbell followed with a line drive down the line in left; however, Oklahoma left fielder Spencer Shelby made a diving catch on the warning track to rob Campbell of extra bases and an RBI. Dickerson was able to move to third on the play, but Duke entered the game and struck out Paul Miles and Gregg Glime to end the threat.
Mace Thurman (2-1) took the loss; he entered the game in the 10th and left after intentionally walking Baker. Starter Shawn Tolleson’s start was spoiled as he held Oklahoma to a pair of runs on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts over 8.1 innings.
Oklahoma starter Andrew Doyle was just as strong, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts over 8.0 innings.
Baylor took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Dickerson led off with a single and moved to third on Campbell’s double. Ben Booker and Glime followed with consecutive RBI groundouts.
Tyson Seng got the Sooners on the board in the fifth with a one-out home run to left.
Dickerson finished 3-for-3 with a walk, while Campbell was 2-for-4. Hansen’s leadoff single in the first and Landis Ware’s two-out double in the seventh were Baylor’s only other hits on the day.
Baylor and Oklahoma conclude the series Sunday at 1 p.m. CDT. The Bears send right-hander Willie Kempf (3-1, 3.62 ERA) to the mound. The Sooners counter with right-hander Michael Rocha (2-0, 3.94 ERA).
