(Tucson, AZ) – The University of Arizona’s troubles continued Friday night while the University of California Los Angeles stopped a slide and won their Pac-10 opener with a 4 to 3 victory. The difference in the game was UCLA scoring a single run in the top of the 10th. UCLA had dropped four straight coming in to the contest while U of A has now lost 7 of 8.
After pinch hitter Mickey Weisser flied out to center field to start the tenth inning for UCLA, leadoff hitter Jermaine Curtis capped off a fantastic night with his fourth and most important hit of the ballgame, a triple to right center field. Alden Carrithers then got the job done by sacrificing Curtis home for the game winning run with a fly to left field.
The Wildcats were led by center fielder Jon Gaston who also went 4 for 5 but with only one RBI. C.J. Ziegler and Colt Sedbrook hit solo home runs for Arizona, but those were their only hits of the game.
