PHILADELPHIA (3/18/08) – Temple senior Stan Orzechowski (Philadelphia, PA / Northeast Catholic) and Penn sophomore Todd Roth (Lanoka Harbor, NJ / Lacey Twp.) have been named the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, in voting conducted by the school’s head coaches and sports information offices.
Orzechowski batted .375 (9-for-24) with eight RBI and four extra-base hits to lead Temple to a 3-2 week. He doubled, tripled and blasted two home runs during the week and raised his average nearly .100 points. His best performance was a 3-for-5, two homer, four RBI showing at Maryland Eastern Shore on Tuesday.
Roth pitched seven three-hit innings without allowing an earned run against NJIT on Saturday. He walked two and struck out nine to lead the Quakers to a 12-1 victory over the Highlanders.
Formed with the mission of increasing the exposure of college baseball in the area, Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball is comprised of the five Division I universities in Philadelphia that sponsor baseball. The Big 5 will announce a Player and Pitcher of the Week every Tuesday during the season. The third annual All-Big 5 baseball team will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
