SEATTLE – The Washington baseball team held Holy Cross scoreless over both ends of a doubleheader Sunday, winning 14-0 and 8-0 to sweep a four-game series at Husky Ballpark.
In the opener, starter Jorden Merry (2-0) combined with two relievers on a three-hit shutout. Merry went six innings, allowing the three hits while striking out six. Josh Scofield threw two innings and Jacob Clem pitched the ninth.
In the nightcap, sophomore Cam Nobles (1-0) held the Crusaders to two hits over six innings. Elliott Cribby, Tyler CheneyBrian Pearl each worked an inning to close it out. and
In the opener, Pearl, a sophomore from Cascade High, went 2-for-4 with six runs batted in. Freshman first baseman Troy Scott continued his hot hitting, going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, two RBI and four runs scored.
Washington (9-6) struck for the game’s first run in the second inning as Scott led off with a double and eventually scored on a Pearl sacrifice fly. Then, the Huskies broke the game open with a six-run third inning.
After David Bentrott walked to lead off the inning, a double from Michael Burgher sent him home. The Huskies then loaded the bases for Scott, whose single drove in two more. A hit batter re-loaded the bases for Pearl, who plated another two with a single. On the same play, Kyle Conley scored on an errant throw to give the UW a 7-0 lead.

The UW upped the lead to 8-0 in the fifth when Scott walked and eventually scored on a groundout from Bentrott. Washington added four more in the sixth and two in the eighth to increase the lead to 14-0. Pearl drove in one in the sixth and two in the eighth.
Crusaders starter Bobby Holmes (0-2) worked five innings in the loss.
In the second game, Scott led off the second with a double, reaching base for his ninth straight plate appearance. After a bunt, he scored on a Jarett Jackson groundout to give Washington a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies broke game two open in the sixth, scoring five runs. After RBI singles from Kyle Conley and Jarett Jackson, Andy Lentz hit a three-run homer to make it a 6-0 lead. In the eighth, freshman Sean Meehan’s pinch-hit, two-run double capped the scoring.
Holy Cross’ Mike Thater (0-1) worked the first six innings to take the loss as Holy Cross dropped to 4-9 on the year.
Next up for the Huskies is a three-game series vs. Utah Valley Thursday through Saturday. Also on Saturday, after the final game against Utah Valley, the Huskies will play host to Portland.
