WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State (11-3) took all three games against TCU (9-8), wrapping up with a 5-1 win Sunday afternoon.
Wichita State scored in the first inning for the ninth time in 14 games. Ryan Jones singled up the middle and Conor Gillaspie brought him around with a double to left field.
The Shockers added a run in both the second and third innings. Kenny Williams, Jr., walked and stole second, allowing him to cross home on a bouncer into center field by Andy Dirks. Josh Workman doubled just fair down the right field line and scored easily on a single by Bret Bascue that bounced past the third baseman.
A sacrifice fly from Bryan Kervin scored the only run for TCU. Matt Vern had reached on a lead off single in the top of the third and moved into scoring position on a single by Corey Steglich.
Williams drew a lead off walk in the bottom of the seventh and moved to third on a ground out and fly out. The two quick outs looked promising for the Horned Frogs, but TCU intentionally walked Gillaspie and it turned out to be a costly move. Williams came home on a wild pitch and Gillaspie, already on the run stealing second, motored all the way to third on the pitch. Dusty Coleman delivered an RBI single up the middle, giving WSU a 5-1 lead that would hold through the ninth.
Wichita State starter Anthony Capra (2-0) went six complete innings, allowing one earned run on four hits. The junior walked no one and struck out four in Capra’s second appearance after emergency appendectomy surgery during opening weekend.
Tyler Fleming took over in the seventh and finished out the last three innings, allowing only two base runners, both on board with singles.
The Shockers take to the road during spring break facing Oral Roberts Tuesday night at 7 p.m., in Tulsa, Okla. WSU will travel to Normal, Ill., for a three-game series with Illinois State in the conference opener beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
